    I completely agree,

    I bought a 2001 grandeur XG a year ago for $9000

New Car Warranty, Leather Trim, smooth as a mother fucker ride.

New = Bad , but depreciation for used = win IMHO.

Never been brave enough to buy a Korean car, but I've had too many Daihatsus (no stock Aus ones though) and theyre actually pretty good little cars. They might not have the best door 'clunk' and they do pick up a few rattles but for cheap disposable cars they're incredibly reliable and will take a thrashing and ask for more.

If you could stretch a bit past 3 grand I know of a G102 thats just had a reasonably hot Applause engine built in Sydney. I used to have one with that conversion and it made it almost fun, far more torque and power than the Charade came with, so no problems with hills or keeping up with traffic (actually, with about 100kw in an 800kg car it'll more than keep up with traffic

Its true. Get a Charade with air and enjoy trouble free (fucking slow) motoring for as long as you wish to keep it.

very true. i know of a bird with a mid-90's excel complete with fender damage, faded paint etc etc. she never bothered to fix any of it either in the 18 months i knew her. fucken lazy!
the car was auto too, and she couldn't reverse down a driveway to save her life, so i could only come to the conclusion that she's a shithouse driver who doesn't gave a fark. much like the people you've mentioned.

Why not just get a slightly older but japanese car?
Something like an early 90's Corolla, Laser/323, pulsar whatever would be better then a hulking Korean piece of shit. They were crap when they were brand new. I hardly think age will do them any good.
Far better to get an older good car then a newer shit one.

Daihatsu = great cars, easy keep up with any legal speed limits, not posey enough for your average quasi snobby Aussie punter though :p

There are plenty of Hyundai Excels and Daewoos (mid 90's to late 90's) listed in the trading post. Saw a few Daihatsu. Are they any reliable? i'm ready to expect saome problems but not any major ones.
There are also Plenty of ED falcons on gas for that price - with todays fuel prices they would be cheaper to run as well. And guaranteed to come with air cond and more quality than a korean car.

Hmm ... any ED Falcon on gas has a billionty km's on it. The Excel is probably a nicer drive, and less is worn out; I'd go the Excel before one of those.
Safer bet is probably a higher-km's N14 or AE92, mind you.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

That being said, I would never own a Hyundai unless it was purley for getting to a train station (or similar) in.

Older Hyundais are great if you want a car that will only take you from A to B, literally for ever.

Mates Missus has a 88 Excel and the thing has 400,000km odd on the clock. Same motor and rarely gets looked at.

Daewoo's I've never had a problem with. Like an Excel, they just get you around.

Build quaility is on par with Aussie cars IMHO. Watch out for repair costs on body panels. Maybe phone a wrecker first.

at one stage all I did was rebuild starter motors on X3 (jelly round shape) excels. Clutch dust was getting into the starter itself and jamming them.

I've always wondered, where did all of those yellow, bright pink and purple excels from the 90's go?
