Phee - Ben from Racepace here in Victoria has a great rep. He has turned out a very large amount of tuff Skylines around the place. If you want to spend money, I would trust him. But on the flip side, good jobs don't come cheap.
I remember standing infront of the car, bonnet up, looking at the oil everywhere, saying "if it is on the road again by the end of the year then I'll be suprised'. Nothing has changed. Annoying yes, but the results will be worth it.
What are the expected results again? Quickest 1/4 mile time? How much have you budgeted for suspension and tyres?
I think putting in a stockish motor for now and building up another block isn't a bad idea. You're going to spend another 6 months building up a car that will be a pig on the road - wouldn't it be nice to drive the thing?
Also agree that if you have several different people doing several different parts of the build it is going to equal disaster. I've seen it many times in all sorts of situations - everyone will blame someone else (when, not if, it fucks up).

I was trying to explain this to someone on MSN... might be worth putting in here.
I have owned an actual performance car for 3 months. It has only been on the road 2 months. I have wanted a R33 since I was 17 - 18 and when I finally get one, it blows up. It's not a nice feeling to have something to have been aiming for, for so long, fuck up straight after you get it. However, if I knew what I know now it wouldn't have happened. That's why they are called mistakes. I am learning about all of this REAL fast.
The advise everyone has given me has been awesome, I really do appreciate it, and you lot have had so much more experience than me. 3 months of a performance car is fuck all compared to what you guys have had the privilege of having.
This is something that keep bugging me when someone mentions downgrading the power.
If you finally got the car you have always wanted, with the performance you have only ever been able to dream about, would you return it to stock or near stock from after only 2 months of on road fun and games? Is 2 months enough?
I know you don't get money back on cars, that's a given. Any money I put into it I might as well put a match to as I will never see it again, but do you guys really regret modifying your cars, to a point that you wish you never did it at all? I haven't even had that chance yet.
I have no intentions on mod'ing the engine to the point it might as well be made out of gold, but I do want something stronger, more reliable, drivable and serious and so why not grab this chance and run? Ok, I don't have the money sitting there just yet, but I have been going without and I think it's worth it. Living on the cheap isn't so bad. Wouldn't want to live this way forever but hell, 5 - 6 months wont kill me. At least I hope not
Anyway, I just thought I would say that so you all know what my decisions are going to be based on. Whatever they are going to be.
And when we spoke about it I begged you to be careful.
I am flying Dale up to do the tune for me once the engine is back and bolted in. He is really helping, and with his advise I wont be making any mistakes
Phee is getting the same as in our 200sx less the cams, i know the setup works and for a street car wont be stressing it one little bit,
basically she is getting pistons, rods, balanced, cometic head gasket, ARP rod bolts, ARP main bolts, ARP head studs, high volume oil pump etc, the usuall block prep, head will be ported and polised, fully serviced, cams inspected for wear, if they are worn then a decision will be made on what to do with them, once the head arrives i will find a sutiable block and my uncle will start prepping it.
Good choice phee - It seems you are going to get the right job done, unlike whoever had the car before you.
It seems almost definite that you will have the fastest 6 cyl in the NT with a steup like that
I reckon it sounds like it was setup pretty well before ie, MoTeC not Microtech, report Option 1 gave it etc... looked like a well setup honest car to me.
Just unfortunate it went cack after using fuel it was not tuned for
Sounds like its going to be an animal upon return though, perhaps you should take the time while the car is off the road to upgrade the suspension, braking system, tyres and perhaps a roll cage so it will be safer once the new power is installed.
I found out yesterday she has an aftermarket heavy duty clutch and flywheel. Considering I am going to be going faster, I am going to have to be able to stop so the brakes will get looked at. The suspension in her isn't too bad so I wont bother with that. I'll find out how much stuffing around and costs are involved in a rollcage, but more than likely that will be done at a later date. Tyres will be tested for street grip when she is back on the road. It rains for almost 6 months a year so tyres are a HUGE factor to getting the car straight.
Does anyone have any suggestions to tyres? I have 18" x 8.5" on the front and 18" x 9.5" on the rears.
