The fact that current ECUs are so open to tampering means that they are only good for entertainment value now.

In the future if they fully seal off the ecu and have critical time and location stamps on all data, then it would be admissable.

I'm not up on law but would some legislation have to be passed to allow this to be considered an 'infallible device'.

I remember ages ago when out on a cruise and pretty much everyone had fancy ecus or boost controllers or power meters, all the max speeds, boost loadings, throttle positions were all available for entertainment purposes.

Thin edge of the wedge, should not be allowed.

Not sure what speed she was going would be relevant anyway, this emphasis on speed seems to be part of the road safety misinformation we are fed.

I'm sure this has been done in the US quite a few times.

I seem to remember reading about a case a few years ago where they used some information from the ABS system somehow. The car was a BMW (could have been a Merc).

At first BMW didn't want a bar of it, but somehow they were forced them to analysize the data and provide a report that the cops could understand.

I'm surprised insurance companies haven't insisted on some sort of GPS logging thing already. Rental companies in the States use them for rental cars. You break the speed limit in the rental car and your insurance is automatically voided. Also the rental company automatically bills your credit card the amount of a speeding fine in case they get hit with one later on the car.

it's ok. there is nothing they can pull out of the old carbie engine !!!!!!!

also if they do pull any information without the owners cancent isn't that stealing ????????

I havent heard of this yet but I would imagine it would be used to support physical evidence collected in major accidents, in a earlier post an example of wheelspin V speed reading giving the impression of a higher speed accident would not be supported by the physical evidence. Police go to great lengths to recreate accidents and are very accurate with the reconstructions. Unfortunately witnessess are very very unreliable for many reasons and this type of extra information would be valuable in coronials etc.

I doubt it would be used for infringements unless it was to prove the ecu had been moddified to increase performance (in the case of restricted licence holders) or emissions/EPA tests.

in the next few years Every BMW will have a IP address so it will be able to talk to Dealership to book itself in for what service is due and also talk to other cars with a Ip address to tell for example of slippy road conditions ahead due to the DSC being active ect ,,

OEM ECU + turn my little battery key on then off = ECU reset

How many ECUs actually store info like throttle position and wheel speed? Surely only proper datalogging systems would hold that much info.

The real question is, do they have the equipment to read non-OBDII compliant ECUs? If not, I imagine sourcing the necessary tools will be a bit of a pain.

Don't think the police will be doing random roadside ECU readings anytime soon.
