I don't think the outback was 7 seat.

Outback won't carry as much gear (and a Pajero won't carry anywhere near as much stuff as a Delica; 4WD's have small interiors compared to commercial vans & are shorter/narrower than near-similar-sized wagons too). However, those SpaceGear things have got poxy ladders onto the roof etc; I reckon you would cop clearance issues.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

that'd be the one - apologies, to many farkin acronyms at work that are similar.

old man would be happy as a pig in shit if he could get a diesel base model that didnt even have carpet. His is basically stripped out inside, bullbar on the front, raised a bit, eleccy fridge in the back and bed.
          Just has no guts.

Delica's are pretty damn useful vehicles, a mate has one i think its the l300 based variant, ie looks like a flying loaf of bread rather then a flying egg. Has heaps of room for junk and people and we regularily use it to tow cars jet skis boats etc. and they are pretty damn handy off road not that we have done anything super serious, but beach running etc

Dunno ... but the L400-based ones are the ones with the nose on them, like the one pictured a coupla posts above. I think they're walk-through as well (don't think the L300-based ones are).

Alright. http://www.delicaclub.com/ is an Australian based forum, crammed full of everything you need to know about these err "things". While there are petrol versions, the vast majority are diesel and are the best bet.

Good info on the models here (if you're willing to wade through it) http://english.auto.vl.ru/catalog/mitsubishi/delica/

The L300 versions seem to be mostly imported under the 15yr rule, so most are 88-90 or so. These are either 2.4 petrol or 2.5 diesel (most turbo but a few NA). Good cheap fun. From what i can gather the main issues are the timing and balance shaft belts, and make sure the chassis / suspension bolts are tight.

The L400 version seems to have started in 94 (SEVS import). These came in SWB and LWB, 2.8 turbo diesel or a 3? litre petrol V6, standard, high and crystal (windowed) roof. The 2.8s are chain driven. Early models have mechanical injection, later ones EFI. A major weak spot is that one of the bolts holding on the bash plate can puncture the oil filter if the plate cops a good hit. Make sure it's sorted before it's too late (unlike one poor bloke on the Delica forums).

Probably the biggest thing to keep in mind with diesel Delicas (or any early diesel) is the injection pumps, as the ultra low sulphur diesel will eventually kill the natural rubber seals, requiring the seals to be changed or the pump rebuilt. They did switch to synthetic seals at some point, but you'll have to dig through the faqs for the date. The Delica guys recommended to factor in as much as $2k for a pump rebuild in the purchase price of the vehicle.

That said, they're frigging cool cars. I'd love one at some point.

If you go on Parramatta rd,starting at Great North Rd.Five Dock & make your way up to Church St.Parramatta you should be able to find atleast 10-15of them to look at in the various car yards. They are really high & long yet feel narrow to drive, pretty slow.If you climb up the ladder onto the roof it's like being on the 2nd floor of a house.

Would you be able to find a SF starwagon,2.4 5spd they were a good drive.
an easy fix is get a mate to drive in front of you at 60 then 80 then 100 and mark in on your speedo with some liquid paper.

I see delicas everyday on road service, diesel/petrol it makes no difference they are all shit. Overheating problems, unavailable spare parts, poor servicability they really are terrible vehicles. Sure, I come across the odd owner who loves theirs but they're in the minority.

                        *digs up old thread*

Anyone have anymore info on these 2 years on?

I'm thinking about selling the XT for either an Import HiAce "Super Custom" Van (http://liveimages.carsales.com.au/de...s/10908749.jpg)
                        or a Delica.

I'm yet to weigh up if I need a 4wd or 2wd model (being I'm not sure it'd ever see the beach more than a few times and most places around accessible in 2wd these days)

Leaning towards the Hiace as they have the same motor as the Prado and have everything that opens and closes.

The 4WD variants would still have issues getting into your local shopping centre/regular car park so do factor that into buying any vans with 4WD.

I have one in at work atm, an L400. It has a cracked head which is common on 4M40 2.8's. Should only cost about $4k to fix plus a new turbo because the actuator pivot has seized in the exhaust housing(also common) causing the problem to begin with.

And I thought Surfs were crap....
