Go and drive one..
I drove one from Sydney to Brisbane and back again with a friend and there was nothing inherently wrong. It is LEAPS ahead of a sierra - so it's not worth comparing them...
I have a mate who owned a Suzuki Drover Hitop (Rebadged Sierra) and he then sold it and bought the Jimny in which he did 120,000kms in 4 years - he just sold it and bought a Frontera because he needed a bit more rear space for his weekends away...
Seriously, there is nothing wrong with them compared to any other small 4WD.
The main problem that all small 4WD's suffer from is the for and aft pitching that can make you seasick of so inclined, a decent set of springs and shocks fixes this.
As a daily driver, they are fine...
As a weekend Warrior, well - they are awesome on the beach, great for bush trails and foresty roads etc, and with a bit of suspension work - almost unstopable in the hard stuff...
I personally wouldn't buy one as I need lots more room as I am a big bastard, but seriously, you could do a lot worse than one of these...
Back on topic, If you're after comfort I think you're barking up the wrong tree and would be better off with a soft-roader rather then a real 4WD (ala the Jimny). The Vitara would probably be worth a look, as they still have proper dual range 4WD, but are very civil (the current one is a monocoque).
But, if you want a proper fun machine that's an okay daily;
Yes.

Yes, it is a 4WD drive train, but the Ignis is the donor/core vehicle used..
Holden just adapted a 4WD drivetrain under it and raised it a few inches and called it a off roader...
I just took a Jimny for a drive.... It drove fine, rode well, handled fine, braked fine, went okish... I think it'll do the trick, revs were just over 3k @ 100km/h.
Only thing I noticed was a slight vibration through the steering wheel when hitting potholes.
jump onto the Suzuki 4WD club site http://www.suzuki4wd.com.au/ and have a chat to some of the Jumney owners on there...
Be careful, some of them are very biased and pretty full on, but you will find a lot of the guys on there are pretty down to earth and honest in what the Jimny is like long term..
Just don't get sucked into the club or you will end up spending thousands of dollars modifying it and make it climb up the side of buildings etc... They get pretty serious...
Jimny = Sierra with more tupperware. Very easy to modify if you want to go hard offroad, and very simple for repairs if need be. If you're only interested in a little bit of light beach work so far as 4wding goes, you can't go past a RAV4. Can't comment on their ride quality standard though.
Because I want something that returns decent fuel economy to get me to work and back above all else... the Jimny returns 7.0L/100km combined, is also a 4x4 with low range and a ladder chassis. I'm sold... just to find the right one now.
