    Daihatsu Applause Head Gasket

    Hi

My brothers car recently did a head gasket. My brother has brought a new car.

I want to fix the car cheap so I can drive it. Its a bit of a piece of crap so not worth paying someone to fix it.

If someone could recommend me some good books or website/tips I would like to have a crack at it.

    cheers

    James

Buy a genuine head gasket from a Toyota dealer, only $59.95. Send the head away to get checked/skimmed if needed. Then put it back together yourself.

some basic rules and you will never go wrong:

get all old gasket surfaces 100% clean and free from grit, scratches and leftover gasket. Head gasket area is critical.

use hylomar spray on the head gasket, and permatex No.5 on anything other than the head gasket that is in contact with coolant.

use a torque wrench on the head bolts and pay careful attention to recommended torques and sequence of tightening. should be a minimum of 3 stages.

DO NOT fuck up the cam timing. On an OHC car always START the job on TDC.
Turns out, far too much has been written about great men and not nearly enough about morons

          hey

I got the head of this afternoon. Cleaned it up and checked the tolerances it appears to be ok to put back on. Info on the gasket gives 3 torque settings when putting the head on gradually building up and my book tells me the order in which to do them them so thats sorted.

I have my torque wrench gasket and hylomar spray. Dumb question I just spray each side of the gasket put the head back on and torque it up then im good to put it all back togeather?

I bashed my elbows 50 times taking of clips and plugs but i think it should all go back togeather pretty well.

Also the car recently had the radiator replaced like 3 weeks ago. Would it still be ok to put the coolant back in that I drained out it looks pretty clean?

          Cheers for the tips

Yeah resue the coolant no worries mate.

Spray both sides, and use the hylomar on any other gaskets that hold water in, and on any bolts that go into water (if there are any)

You're good to go. Clean up, fill the radiator and run it till it's hot with the cap off, then it should burp and you can top the coolant up and away you go.

Probably worth saying that you should change the engine oil and filter before you run it again. Taking the head off can let a lot of coolant and crap into the oil.

I was extra carful with timing and did it exactly by the book what have i stuffed?
