The roughness of a Landrover is akin to the roughness that Bubba gives you in jail.

Even when they were taken over by a company that should know how to make a car they still made the same piece of shit as before. Only difference is parts became euro expensive and the wiring no longer caught fire(as often).

As a summary I did a quick count of people I know who have owned Discoverys. I came up with 9 people.

2 of them have had vritually no dramas, 3 of them had dramas that you would not expect from a modern car but they built a bridge and moved on (and bought X5s or ML Mercs).

The other 4 have had major dramas to the point of abusing dealers/threatening legal action etc.

In particular, my old boss threatened LR with everything he could fire at them. In the first year of ownership his Disco had 27 visits to the workshop, 3 on the flatbed. Finally LR offered to buy his 1 year old low milage car back...at 50 % of what he paid for it !!

You don't want to know the stats for Range Rovers ownership.

This thread is almost as funny as the Supercrown thread.

my friend here in Sapporo want sot convert his series 1 landy to manual (since there were only auto in japan)....

so far, looks like a $6-8K job....

he's wasting his money then? (he bought it new and never had issues... so far... except for the oil seals factory installed backwards )

maybe someone could send a dead one from aus :D

They have a real presence on the back of a flat bed don't they.

Like they were designed to look good up there.

Geez we are a negative bunch, but I think there is good advice here, or at least enough info for old mate to make an informed choice.. Funny too.

But how many of them have actually taken them out of the suburbs and into the type of country that you will be working in?

Are you kidding...they value their life too much and there is no way they would drive more than 5kms from the nearest LR dealer for fear of breaking down and being stranded for weeks.

One of the guys at work blew a head gasket in his Rangie when he went to Canberra for the weekend. He had to get it flatbedded back to Sydney as no one in the ACT would touch it.

As for Defenders....take one for test dirve....they are an odd design and have wierd ergonomics/interior feel (somthing to do with the 50yr old design).

As for driving one, the only one I have dirven was a late 80's one that had the V8....my mate owned for a while...he bought it brand new and it dropped a cylinder liner on the way home from the dealership !!

Most people here have heard enough stories to know not to look at them.

Sounds like you have made up your mind anyways though.

                                Good luck.
