Your father got insulted because they overvalued his Commodore wagon?
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

You know i won't bite back at you Forg; you will curse me back to medieval times... surely you dont believe 80% of subaru dealers have any credibility when it comes to knowledge on cars

for as long as I can remember subaru dealers have had it easy

people line up to buy their admitted high selling wares so they have years of aloofness

yeah subaru dealerships do get it a bit easy in that at least their product is a long lasting reliable and most of all reputable long life vehicle. They do build them tough, safe and reliable. (most subaru's wouldn't have trouble ticking past 1,000,000kms)
'10 Forester Diesel 6Spd - Slow and sensible
'93 SWB Pajero - Slow but scary
          '89 MX5 B6-T - Scary not slow

after 5 gearboxes, 10 diffs and 30 lightweight clutches to stop more gearbox breakages

and hey i ain't knocking you- i'v owned a few now, and one for a long time in particular... they aren't 'that' reliable, they can be- but it seems it comes down to the cards you were dealt i believe!

And i indeed too know people who have had very reliable ones, but compared to some cars- without particular attention paid to regular servicing they really dont take to the australian conditions well (imo)... the newer ones might, but in the past they certainly have had their problems.

And just so I dont start a shit fight- im not knocking you and i mean that!!! - I love subi's, but it's just in all the models over many years and people i've known, they really aren't quite as reliable as people make out!

Ninja Edit: As for tough & safe, i will 100% agree on that... seen some hard prangs, been in some hard prags; and for their weight (older ones) and style the safety is quite remarkable.

It's truly been sooo long since I've been involved in the purchasement of a new car that I wouldn't know. Tynan's, the local dealer when I had the Liberty, were pleasant enough &, while overpriced, I don't think they were more overpriced than any other dealer.
Your trade-in, however, would've just been a wholesale value which probably came back from an independant wholesaler who buys from a dozenty dealers ... whenever I've been involved in a trade-in situation, the value offered has always been within a coupla hundred dollars (pending new-car discount of course, if you negotiate $1500 off the new car then they offer you $1500 less for the trade-in than the dealer next door). With all the moans other people have had about trade-in values, I've never been involved in a car-buying expedition that involved a trade-in that I considered too low (considering it's the wholesale market - and those cars have to go to auction and still make someone a buck).

On reliability ... hasn't it only been the performance ones that've had 'issues'? Most car buyers (who buy non-WRX's) probably write that sort of thing off as user error; they've never had a problem with their 23kW 1.8L Impreza LX, so how come Johnny Peeplayta's car keeps breakign stuff? Silly Johnny Peeplayta ... can't be the car's fault!

Not after the dribble that gets dished to the sales and other employees... it's like a brain-washing session.

Surely you don't rely on any information given to you by someone selling you something? You have to do you own research. Think about electronic stores, you wouldn't want to ask salesmen about which T.V to buy, many of them will know less than you. Cars, are no different.
