    Diesel fourrunner would be fine I reckon.

    PS Diesel's will run underwater, with no battery, no leads, no plugs. I'm guessing getting the Cordia going after being underwater is a bit of a problem...

      All right, now we're getting somewhere. Does the rear seat fold down well enough that it clears a mattress in the back or am I going to be better off pulling the rear seat out and making it strictly a two seater?

      I only twigged half an hour ago that the australian petrol 4runners were the Y motor... don't know it? What is its reputation like? Anyone known problems (cracking heads etc?)
      Don't worry, thats just the self-preservation instinct, in my experience you can safely ignore it.

        Bigmuz: You saw the picture there with the turbocharger full of water right? Well that water had also passed through the airflow meter and proceeded to fill the engine.

        You are right though, after completely filling the airbox, airflow meter, turbo and engine with water it took some pretty serious work to get running;
        1. Remove plugs
        2. Crank
        3. Re-install plugs
        4. Continue to drive for another 20 months and counting.

          I think they would be marginally too narrow for a reasonable sized mattress in the back, but I am big, that's why i am bigmuz.

          Please find a diesel one. We need as many diesel guys here as we can get. I'll turbo it for you if you want :D

          I think you were perhaps really lucky with the cordia. Spark plugs and water aren't the best of friends.

          PS did it go hydraulic?

            Yep, hydraulic locked at about 60km/h. How it didn't banana the rods into a big siezed/snapped mess is a mystery to everyone involved. All I can theorise is that because it was already hydroplaning the car wasn't trying to wind the engine over as hard as it might have on bitumen.

            What are the different motors in the diesel ones? 2L and 4L or something? Are there different evolutions of the motor/diesel pump/gearbox I should stress about? How many weekends and cartons does a turbo conversion cost and how do I sell it to my g/f?

              Selling to the gf is easy.
              Encourage everyone on the trip to ask "are we there yet?" every 5 minutes and encourage continous conversation on 2 way radio about how a certain 4WD is slowing everyone down and thats why were not there yet.

                  Makes it more efficient. Makes it use less fuel per litre of air. Actually makes it use less fuel per km too, but that is irrelevant.

                    L, 2L, or 3L engines are the 2.2, 2.4 and 2.8 litre diesels if haynes know what they are talking about.

                    I'd better suggest a 1jz conversion as well otherwise people might think i am slipping.

                    http://www.mtqes.com.au/Hilux3L.htm

                    Same engine as the diesel hiluxes and utes obviously.

                    Plus one of these;

                    The 3L is much later, you are looking for an L or 2L.

                        thats a massive oversimplification adam . you know full well i changed the oil after that.
                        and cleaned the carpet.
                        and, having started to remove the head in middle of the bush, retorqued the head bolts to correct torque specs.
                        when i got back to toowoomba.
                        2 weeks later.
                        :D

                          you could probably get one with a 253 on gas for not much more than a Y/L powered lux

                            A caravan matress fits fine, they are somewhere between a double and single sized. Easy for 2 to sleep side by side..

                            You dont need to pull the rear seats, they fold down flat.

                                Now normally I'd start ranting on about the various import models, but seeing as you're unfamiliar with diesels, and that the Surfs don't exactly have the greatest reputation, I'll restrain myself.

                                As for the 4x4 L300s, they're great but a petrol model will drink fuel like no tomorrow. Think 22+L/100km
