I just fill my car when required and not worry about the fluctuations, as I've done the depreciation cost calculation before.
If everyone really wanted to go green our towns need to be designed differently.:p
We would live within walking/cycling distance of our work,(I would not like to live in or near the industrial area I work in now, so I'd have to find another Job?:p :p )
We would plant gardens that require little/no maintainance.(no mower fuel used)
at least this way the fuel we used would be for recreational use which is what we all like doing!...........Driving our cars for recreation!Go in the Direction of your Dreams, Live the Life You've Imagined

Sounds like how the Govt make a lot of purchases or award contracts, they mostly just go for the lowest bid, even though the long term costs are often higher.Originally posted by brownyThat said, I reckon you are on the right track wrt looking at life cycle costs. This is something I see people not doing so often in the business world. You probably wouldn't be surprised to learn of the number of businesses who buy on capital cost alone and pay no attention at all to operating costs.“You have to be the change you want to see in the world.”

We do quite a lot of local Govt projects.....
eg one I'm looking at ATM.
1 yr old pool heating installation. $50k to install. $50k+ to run.
Pool attendant reckons lucky to get 5yrs from it because of the way its been installed.
Alternative - $100k to install. $30k to run. Should get 10-15yrs out of it. Not even considered....

I've had to explain this to a lot of people after buying the XR8, the truth is that rego and insurance cost about the same as petrol for me. I'm guessing depreciation will be about the same as rego + insurance + petrol + servicing + tyres...
Total Cost of Ownership is something that is always discussed at my work, initial purchase price is irrelevant on its own.

Yes but you forgot something. During the fuel crisis there was petrol rashening which meant on a given day you could only fill up your car ex amount. This amount was very small and was usually only enough to get you to work and back. Now if you have a big v8, how are you going to get to work? Thats why they were sitting on the side of the road with for sale signs on them.Originally posted by GAZ914Same thing happened in the '70s during the "fuel crisis".
Anything V8 couldn't be given away as people went for smaller cars.
Sigmas, Bluebirds, Coronas were kings in the late '70s
Eventually everyone woke up to the fact that the cost difference was bugger all and the family fit better into the larger cars and sales of Falcadores took off again.
Are we at the same point again?
Gaz
So you HAD to buy a smaller car if you wanted to get to work. There was really no choice. My parents at the time had a torona from memory, and had to sell it to buy a sigma.Nissan 200sx 97 S14a - Stolen

We are apparently not far enough from Sydney to get the next tier of fuel transport subsidy, and this town is a captive market with only a small handful of servos......

fuel is as low as 124.9 in sydney so that 10c less means that someone is make a slice and I don't think it's the QLD govt.Originally posted by jampacPrice of fuel in sydney is usually 10 cents a litre more than qld. Qld has some deal going were they pay less tax on fuel.Originally posted by boxxx

i think you just answered your own question !! reaching into the wallet every week reminds you constantly of it, depreciation usually only raises its head once..Originally posted by bigmuzSo are we overly fascinated by fuel prices when the only impact they have is on our wallets week in and week out, and we can ignore the massive loss in depreciation?
that, and the cars that depreciate lots are usually bought with the heart, not the head.EMS Cold Start - starts third time, every time.
