I'd still like to know how many people buy new cars and turn them over after 2 years?
Put that in your pipe and smoke it

its now 1.239 at my local and i have never filled up at more than 1.359 or so.
well thats for rulp. +10 for 98.
You've got a pretty cheap local then; admittedly I won't use Dodgy Servos 'cos have personally had Dodgy Fuel issues (and the local mechanic has had Dodgy Fuel issues from the nearby Woollies servo). Maybe it's due to that policy, but it's rare that I get fuel for under $1.25/L for ULP. PULP is usually $1.35-$1.40 Optimax is rarely more'n 5c/L higher, and I accidentally picked-up the wrong bowser-thingy & filled the Foulcan with $1.50/L Optimax Extreme week-before-last.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

We subsidise fuel through additional tax come rego time.

Alot... in my building at lease half the residents lease/hire purchase vehicles on a biannual basis. I was questioned as to why I don't do it as I think wholly owning your vehicle is unfashionable now.

that, and the cars that depreciate lots are usually bought with the heart, not the head.
Hahahaha! Yeah I bought that 380 after I just fell in love with its rugged good looks. :D

Tax thru rego, you pay stuff all for rego up there. My soarer rego cost me $700 in sydney and thats cheap. In qld i'd be half that.

Oh and I paid $1.40 tonight to fill up with optimax 100, which I thought was cheap.

The rego component only costs you ~$250, the rest is CTP. You have to see a Queenslander's rego to see what their CTP component is, to compare; I think you'll find NSW in general is paying the Sydney "Because They Can Afford It" tax.

On the topic of running costs though, the latest Open Road (NRMA magazine) arrived today. There's an article about running costs in it, and they've got the least & most expensive in a few size categories. In true NRMA style, they suggest that Fred Bloggs, single & 39, should be driving a Holden Viva instead of his 2.5 Impreza RS in order to save himself $65 a week. They don't seem to have taken into account the extra medical cost in combatting the depression that would set in ...

nah man, my gf has a commodore and it's cheaper to rego it in nsw (where her parents live) than in qld (where she lives).. so qld rego is more. maybe you are not taking into account ctp?

and all the clever kids are leasing because if they earn 70k/yr (which is common for young yuppies in syd/bris/melb) a wrx costs you about $420/mo on a novated lease, whereas on a normal lease it costs about $740... and the novated lease includes all the running costs. so turning over the car quickly is really to your advantage. all i need to do now is start earning 70k/yr and a brand new wrx will cost me less than my 2yo clio to run!!!! hooray for tax loopholes.

I paid $363 for rego on my soarer and pink slip was $30. Thats nearly $400 in rego, then the 350 odd for the green slip. Thats actually over 700.

Its cheaper in qld, much cheaper. My corolla which is a lighter vehicle cost me $226 rego and $30 in a pink slip which was its first one, then still the 350 again for green slip.

As have they been around here, since last Friday or so. But then I was surprised to see 1.229 on Friday; don't think I'd seen it under 1.30 (excepting those bodgy 4c/L scheme prices) for probably months prior.

Methinks your numbers are a bit screwy ... a Focus Zetec, ~$12k or about 30% less to buy, costs about $600/mo on what's currently a really good deal & assuming you do 25k kms/yr. $70k/yr is nowhere near the top tax bracket either, at $70k & 25k kms/yr it's actually a tad borderline as to whether there's any real benefit to a novated lease (insurance cost for kiddies is probably the biggest saving at that level).

Once upon a time it was hugely cheaper though, 10 years ago when NSW rego+CTP was getting damned close to $1k, it was only a few hundred in Qld. I thought at the time the saving was because Qld CTP was inbuilt in the rego - the gumbyment probably removed it, because people just weren't paying enough dammit.

no, rich get lots richer, poor get less poorer.. and whilst from a socialist point of view i dont agree with that, from an economic rationalist point of view the rich are paying a fuckload more taxes so it's a bit dumb to tax them so much, it gives them no incentive to work more.. and them working more means way more taxes than a low income earner doing his hard earned bit.

anyway, my figures may be out - i was using the cba novated lease calculator based on 20k/yr.. because i cbf-ed calculating the figures. but either way, for a 25yo on 70k/yr it costs fuckall to put a car on a novated lease. i work with many people in the exact same situation and to them, a cheaper car is just not worth it because it's a shitbox by comparison and it dosnt cost much less... now, how many years until i can say that? a few. but anyway, they're in the majority.
