More than just a timing belt replacement?

I've just did a ring around asking for approx. costs for replacing the timing belt. I got some quotes $290-350. I also got a couple saying i should change the water pump, seals and other stuff while they're in there for around $580-$620. I only just bought a Mitsu Mirage so i have no service history at all.

Which option should i take? i like cars but unfortunately i'm unfamiliar with the mechanics of a car. $600 is not a problem, so long its good for the car and the mechanic isn't ripping me off.

    thx

I'm guessing this is a 100k service? Water pump shouldn't need replacing unless it's mucking up.

Your better off doing it if its at 100 000 km.

we replace (my workplace) the waterpump while doing the cam belt, though that's on 944's and 928's where if you have pulled so much apart, it's worthwhile doing the little bit extra while your there. we often do front seals on 944's too, any sign of oil, and it gets done, better doing it then and there than waiting two months and having to do it all over again. grand scheme of things, works out well, and it assures you for another 100k of driving, that things are sound, water pump won't sieze and cook your engine.

i recommend you buy a workshop manual and do it yourself, cam belts are a piece of piss.

Hell, when I bought my R32, we went in to do the timing belt as insurance, and while we were there we did the water pump as well. Only had 25000 on the clock.

Come to think about it, maybe the water pump shit itself and we did the timing belt while we were there. Same dif.

            cheers

but very expensive if you fuck up. If you're not confident here, or can't afford the consequences, pay someone.

the GM "J" engine such as in camira, astra, daewoo, frontera, N12 pulsars etc etc use the water pump as the tensioning device and they always sieze in place. These motors it's a given that the water pump be replaced with the belt. On anything else it's up to you as to whether you want the expense of replacing something that may or may not fuck up in the near future.

Crap now you've got me worried. I haven't changed the pump on my Astra after changing the timing belt again at 316,000k's :knock:

if they managed to adjust it without fucking it, then dont worry about it. belt adjustment is the only time you stuff the pump on those. Good chance they just included it in the cost of the job anyway.
