merc 190e-fuel usage? things to look out for when buying

just after some non bias opinions on the merc 190e...
im kinda looking at one for a daily driver (1990, 1.8L 4cyle, auto version)

    http://www.drive.com.au/buy/market_v...s.asp?nvic=HX7

iv been told thye use quite a bit of fuel, but in most reviews iv read they put it a 10L or less per 100km..

anyone owned one of driven on and know what actual usage is?

anyone have any thigns to look out for when buying one?

    cheers

do they have the same "engine wiring loom insulation failing after 10 -15 years" that the 320E does? not cheap.

My mum has had one for years, pretty solid car but the gearing (as discussed last week) really isnt the best for driving around town. Not sure what its like on fuel and she lives in the country so whatever milage she gets wont really be applicable to using one as a daily around town

are these worth importing under the 15 y.o. rule?

i seem to recall there are even 190e 2.6 mercs under $10k

They are not worth owning....they are probably the most gutless car I have ever driven.

As for things to look out for ...sure mercs are well built and go forever BUT when they do go wrong they can but a big dent in your wallet.

                2.6L inline 6 2597cc 120 kW 8.9 secs 212 km/h

                2.0L inline 4 1998cc 87 kW 9.8 secs 190 km/h

                1.8L inline 4 1797cc 80 kW 12.1 secs 185 km/h

The 2.6 sounds pretty quick for what it is.

Even the 190e (which I gather is actually 2 litre) sounds 'ok'

The 180e sounds completely off the pace.

I was referring to the 1.8, my brother had a 2.0...it was dog slow around town (it felt like the handbrake was on all the time) but on the freeway it was very smooth.

My mate in the UK had a 2.3 Cosworth version....it went well.

They also start in 2nd gear so the delayed reaction from when you push the accelerator pedal (all 25cm of travel) is painfully long.
