    fiberglass widebody - random questions

day dreaming in my busy life and wanted to get these few things cleared up :knock:

Few questions on doing a fiber glass wide body conversion to a steel body

1: when getting a wide body done what happens with the original guard/skin/panel?? As the rim and tire would be sticking out the stock guard (hence the reason for the widebody) this would cause a problem when hitting bumps or even lowing with the tire slamming into the original guard.. is this cut out of the car? If its cut from the car the inner and outer skins would then have to rejoined? I would assume/hope that it is

2: how do they get the glass to bond to the metal well enough not to crack at the join

Im assuming youre looking at things like the guards you see on cool MK1 escorts etc.

    1. Basically you mark up where the new guard/flare fits on & cut anything that is below that mark out. Hopefully you will then try to seal it up & make it nice.

    2. You do it properly.

I believe some guys make a mould and do the whole panel in fibreglass/carbon. But the ones that I have seen that are 'extensions' of the origonal guards are usually bolts in and then cleaned up with bog or whatever they use.

I want to do a widebody myself but I really dont trust my moulding skillz.

yeah thats for the fronts.... but im more interested in teh rear 1/4 panels.. u cant remove and replace them with fiberglass ones.. just wondering whats used to prevent the 2 seperating and cracing at teh joint between metal and fiber glass

          ie.

Make it out of metal and weld them on.
If its firbreglass you will have to bolt/screw them on, and bog up the holes.

In the CAMS manual of motorsport, near the front. theres a pictures of a red dodge viper and details of some guys who specialize in widebody etc etc. They're over in the eastern states. If i get a chance i'll put their details up here.

They'd probably tell you whats what if you ring.
