Actually, I think a lot of the mechanicals were shared with the sedans & steel-body coupes ... it'd be the exterior (aluminium) bits that'd be hardest to get, coupled with any 'trinkets' that were added to the interior (eg. any extra BMW-branded gauges, whether there were special seats, etc).
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.
You can still get repro aluminium panels, they arent as expensive as you might think and even mobile traditions were still selling them last time i checked.
Engine and gearboxes will fetch a premium, especially if you are looking to buy a later twin cam model. Ive got a good write up here about the cars somewhere, might see if i can scan it.
