strangely i never had a problem with turning circle on any fwd car - even the land barges like avalons and magnas

and this from a guy who every so often does a RWD full power U-turn that seems to halve the turning circle (and halve the tyre tread)

Agreed, but Toyota has very strong sales in this country (I think they're actually number 1 if you include commercial sales) so apparently boring white goods = teh win.

I for one would love to see Toyota Australia import some of the more interesting RWD sedans from Japan, but I also recognise they'd be priced out of the market. It's no coincidence that the existing RWD Toyota's sold here (Altezza, Aristo, Celsior etc) are sold under the prestige Lexus brand. They're nice cars but too expensive for your average tight-arse Aussie, which is why they sell boring FWD whitegoods to that demographic.

Why is that so?
The only reason I can think-of for anyone believing a Commode is better than a car which is actually good to drive is blind brand loyalty. Sorry, but it's absolutely insane!

I think that's obvious to Toyota, and it's something they're trying to change.
Although whether this is the right car to do it with I don't know ... it'd maybe be smarter to satisfy Norbie & import an overpriced RWD model or two, and only stick TRD badges on the back of them.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

I laugh each time I see the "we race, you win" b/s TRD adds. Show me a rally-bred Corolla with turbo and 4WD I can buy....

Tried driving one on Country blacktop (y'know, with corners n'shit) and then tried an equivalent Avalon on similar road? No comparison! The Commodore makes it feel like the wallowy, gutless bowlsmobile it really is. Oh sure, its quiet and smooth, but so are wheelchairs.

                  So in summary, you're wrong.

I find threads like this very amusing. My olds were "dyed in the wool" big aussie rwd fans until they bought their first 6 cyl camry (badged as holden Apollo). They live in the the country and drive many miles of country blacktop and the toyota shits on anything for reliability, smoothness, durability and even performance/ecomony ratio. Not talking about Avalon, but in general it's people who can't drive FWD cars that complain about the handling of Camrys/Vientas. I've always found them heaps of fun to drive, if you keep in mind the basics of FWD cornering. Only problem with the older v6's was torque steer in the wet. A 350,000km v6 camry will shit all over it's falcodore eqivalent in TCO (total cost of ownership), reliability and handling.

I doubt Aurion will be a sales winner, but the smart people who buy them just might be!

Your parents must drive really, really hard. The way a normal person drives, a modern large car could be FWD, RWD, AWD, or operated by skyhook & you can't tell the difference apart from minutae of behaviour that a non-car-enthusiast just doesn't give a toss about. Sure, if you're trying to do Macquarie Pass uphill at warp-speed & you've got the power to do it, you'll notice a difference ... but not if you're just puttering around country roads at or around the speed limit.

Avalons are no more wallowy than Commodes their own age either ... their downfall is appearances & relative power (we compared a few cars for my dad ... the Avalon was also harsh & noisy c/f the Camry which was released halfway through the Avalon's model-cycle, but nowhere near as wallowy or noisy or plasticky as the Falcodores).
