actually, whats a V160 worth these days? what sort of torque can they cope with?
Turns out, far too much has been written about great men and not nearly enough about morons

Not much. A mates 12A turbo RX-3 splattered one all over the track and it only ran a 9.2 sec pass... :D

            a feather weight rx3 broke a v160 ? farken.
secoh , rough guide here , a standard v160 box has carried a lard-ass supra to back-to-back 8.6 passes in the states.
so you could say yeh , a bit strong.

V160 is rated by Getrag for 350ftlbs but that is some extended load rating and they don't disclose over what time (1 hr, 24hr, 1 month???). Obviously they can take a heap more 'shock' load as experinced when launching, changing gear etc.

3rd gear Syncro is the most common prob i have heard of but is that the box or just bad drivers?

As with any box though, you abuse it and it'll break.

Yeah, the same 12A powered RX-3 has since run 8.1 @ 164 mph and is currently the Australian and World record title holder for the untubbed "OzMod" class...

It makes something like 700hp at the tyres (i'd get shot for revealing exact numbers and rpm, boost etc !!) so it's got some herbs for a "small block" 12A i guess... Doesn't turn corners real well though so i reckon it's pointless... :D

About $3k seems to be the median price these days, but you can occasionally nab a bargain if you keep your eyes peeled. As already mentioned they can handle arseloads of torque; in fact they're probably one of the strongest OEM boxes in any passenger car.

The same basic unit is used in the R33 and R34 GTR (in AWD config of course) and an earlier version of the BMW M3/M5, I forget which.

E36 s2 M3 was a 6 speed, I think thats the model your thinking off.

Ive had two mates do 3rd gears with some abusive driving.

yeah it will go behind the 3sge.

Oh for a 3S the other option is the Altezza 6-speed (J160 I think it is), they're supposed to be a decent bit of gear. Same box as the S15, MX5 and S2000 apparently.

that is correct, same box as supra with bigger input shaft and slightly higher torque rating because of it, 3rd gear seems a little fragile in synchro department
                            any '96 + M3

Bigger input shaft, really?? The input shaft on my V160 is freaking massive, and I can't imagine a stock M3 six having more torque than a turbo 2JZ?

EDIT: here's a photo of my old W58 (left) next to the V160. You can see the difference in the input shafts pretty clearly.
