I want to see a race between a S12, Supra, GT-R, handivan, Supercrown, Cathay or whatever edo's got that's moves, go-kart, M3 Vs my 700T series Shinkansen! And anyone else who wants to prove their manhood! I call out Fatboy to bring his Thomas the tank engine too.
So cut the bullshit, I name the place: anywhere parallel to a standard guage track, time: ? and let's get it over with! :D
No worries, shame the track ive chosen has no power lines :D
Bastard, was going to quietly pump up the juice at the substation .
No power lines, no problem...give me 12 months to shoehorn the pratt and whitney FT8 gas turbine (JT8D) rated at 60MW. There are 9 motor cars onboard that's 540MW, fuck it's gonna fly off the rails.
Bombardier Jet Train is fitted with a Pratt and Whitney ST40 gas turbine (PW150) 4,904kW.
Steel wheels to steel track have a pretty shithouse coefficient of friction. That limits their acceleration to a huge extent. If it is wet or snowy it is unbelievably finicky. All the trains have traction control to stop wheelspin on accel and braking.
In the old days there was a pipe that blew sand and air down onto the track to get you more traction when starting off from a dead stop. Primitive but effective.

Not just the old days. They still do it now and it pisses me me off becuase the sand jams the points then I get called out to fix them.

Trains could but it'd be poiintless to accelerate hard off the line quite obvious...slow start then it'd hunt you down :D.
In design we work out the acceleration and braking force, then after it's built we take it out on the test track and tune the motors and adjust the brakes for the best optimum acceleration, top speed and braking effort. Course the heavier the train and the faster you go, the longer it takes to brake...some cases it takes up to 3km braking to standstill.
Muz is correct, all trains have traction control, slip or slide control is what we call it. It's a tricky bit of system, again on the test track we run the train through different traction and braking scenarios. Heavy rain/typhoon simulation runing through a few inches of water above rail, lost of BCU or BECU (Brake Electronic Control Units) to measure other BECU have pitched in sufficent higher braking effort to maintain the same braking distance, lost of electric braking or pneumatic braking etc.
All these test are to ensure we can maintain optimum performance regardless of the situation, unless something like an earthquake. The earthquake detection system is another sophisticated system.
But as far as the passenger is concerned if a train is late they are late for work.
All i know is that on the XPT the traction control works by opening the contactor and the train shunts back and forth like it is doing the hippy hippy shake! Not the most advanced system I guess :D
1.) install racing harness seat belts to passenger seats, even in the toilet cars
2.) charge to experience a once in a life time event
3.) ...
4.) profit $$$
Change Topic again.........Apparently Bill's blown a gear box at the start of his first race at the Sports Car Nationals.....How disappointing go all that way and not even get one race in!

Malalla Racetrack, we did some testing there ages ago and its about $2.5K to hire out. theres even a railroad just near it for your train :D
1. Organise transport for all the racers
2. Advertise 'The PF race of mismatched cars'
3. charge spectators $20 entry - with promise of skidz etc
4. ?????
5. Profit
