turbo model the routine is that he does his laps /shopping/trip home first then picks up the food at the shop up the road on the way back

Ah ok...so it's not like they have to drive down the Old Pac Hwy, do a practice run up the Race To The Pie route and then pick up lunch at the RoadWarriors Cafe, and then come back? My bad.

maybe the apprentice had to do a few laps of the service circuit to get his times down?

I don't see the big issue with 38 km, it is more than expected but not excessive. I expect the "reason" the workshop manager will give is they were doing the 110 point safety check / roadtest etc.

I reckon it depends on what the repairs/replacements are and where the Dealership/workshop is located.

I had a R31 GTSII Skyline in for the 20,000 service and it came back with 55km extra after the two day service. I questioned the service manager after I got back to the car and he admitted that he took the vehicle home that night to check the cold start (that was sometimes playing up). I was a little concerned that he had to drive it ~50km to check something that could have been done IN the workshop WITH all the diagnostic equipment. He ended up giving me a full tank of fuel and a $100 voucher off my next service..

(I never took it back there)

I reckon 5-10km is MORE than enough unless there is an issue that needs a longer drive to get to a freeway/hills etc...

Something is goin on. I put a new engine in the other day and we didnt need to drive it that far. Ill put one up for the apprentice or mechanic in the passenger seat with someone bit more experienced driving.

5-10km max. Anymore than that and there just driving around in it using it as the work ute for the day. At the hourly rate they are probably charging you should expect the best of the best faultless service.

I'd be calling the DP and asking for an "explain please" - whinge enough and the next service will be free.

but in reality, it's 30kms - unless there is no explanation at all from the dealer it's not that big a deal.

i think anything more than 5km and they're taking you for a ride (literally)

sorry Paul, sounds like they took it for a good drive/strapping today.... 38km would nearly get you out to Mt Glorious and back if you got it serviced where i think you did?

It's not that 38km is excessive (well it is) but PETROL ISNT FREE.

So tell them that's 38km from that tank that you dont get to use, driving to work this week.

assuming that they were sticking to the 60kph speed limit [ ], why were they driving it around for 3/4 of an hour ?

I have never owned a nice car so wouldn't know but wouldn't these guys just be so used to seeing similar cars so they wouldn't even bother.....

I mean, I have a friend who works in Crown valet, and he gets to park a ferrari everyday, and he tells me, that when somebody brings in one now, he will just let one of the new guys park as he can't be bothered any more and the novelty has worn off.........

First time I ever saw a car put into a driveway sideways, in person at least, was when at Tynan Subaru (back when their service department was behind the car delearship) and some apprentice was "servicing" one of those first-of-the-4WS Preludes (when they were new). I was kinda surprised the tyres didn't peel off the rims, the layback was fairly hefty.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.
