I'm sceptical of the price to repair also, depends on the damage to the rear panel...
    I got nothing

      Very recent experience here.

Subie Outback. To remove and refit a bumper, do some very mild corner repair (mainly just smoothing ripples from a dent that had popped back out on it's own) and repaint the whole thing to get rid of the older scratches and so on.....$300.

To strip down the tailgate in order to repaint the whole thing because there was one tiny damaged section in the paint....$1000 (I think).

A rear quarter repair requiring having the dent pulled out and prep and paint, if done properly, is most likely >2k, with the bumper repair possibly adding a bit more. There is no way around that without mates rates.

      cheers

        Hmm, I thought so too...

It's either this, or a swift GTi...

Looking at a 1997 GTi swift done 160,000ks for $6k tomorrow. Stock as a rock.

I'd say that would be a good deal really... I don't want something that I'm going to have to work on all the time, just something she can hop in and drive (the 5 minutes to work).

I'm leaning towards the swift, but she loves Starlet GT's.

am i correct in saying you can't bash out a rear quarter?

front fenders are no probs. - you can remove the fender and then bash it out

          look like $1.5k - $2k

best get some clearer photos and hound a few smashies

Starlets (teh new hotness) > Suzuki Swift GTis (especially with tri-spokes).

I know Starlets are the new hotness, I have this major soft spot for them, but will I be forever replacing gaskets, and chasing oil leaks etc.

I guess I'm scared, the last Toyota I owned was the biggest POS and forever breaking down, cost me an arm and a leg (MZ20 GT Limited).

And we had the Swift engine in the mini pushing out 200HP at 15psi and it loved every minute of it.

Surprised to hear you had such dramas with a Toyota! I guess it was an old one though. I'm not biased towards one manufacturer more than any other but Toyota holds a fairly high place on my scale. I've owned two Supras, and a friend has a Starlet, another with a Soarer, and a couple corolla owners as well. Never had much trouble with any of these cars. But I guess any car has the potential to be a pile of crap depending on how its previous owner treated it.

I hear Simon has a mint one I'm sure he'd consider selling you

but yeah, if it's only damage to the bumper, take it to one of those spiffy plastic repair mobs... if it requires panel beating, bend over..

If the rest of the car was good and he's willing to discount for the ding, I'd buy it.

I think it was just the fact it had a 7MGTE.

I know so many people who have them/had them and every single one is a nightmare. I think Toyota outsourced that motor to Alfa Romeo or something

One of my supras was a 7MGE! Granted, yes it did the headgasket, (Would hardly be a 7M if it didn't. It'd be ashamed to call itself a 7M) but other than that I had zero troubles. I'm not counting the 3 week period in which all the sensors seemed to go one by one, as this was later revealed to be my mechanic purposefuly damaging them to bring me back for repeat business. Dodgy fucker.

Anyway - if the starlet is good everywhere else and the price is at least $2000 less than straight ones I'd buy it.
