I looked hard at a Polo GTi but I didn't like it. There is a bit of turbo lag and it just doesn't feel as "nice" as the Golf GTi.
It's probably not a bad car for <30 but I would look to the Mazda 3 MPS.
Which is close to $40k. Not quite the same market.

There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences.
When buying and selling are controlled by legislation, the first things to be bought and sold are legislators.

Driven (spanked) the MKIV R32 and MKV R32 (as well as the GTI variants, and own one)
I'd have to say the MKIV R32 is a better car imho, the MKV is too neutral for my liking i.e: no understeer, no oversteer (can get the MKIV sideways just nicely)
The DSG is definately my pick in the MKV cars too.
I'd get a GTI MKV with APR chip and decimate all. and save the extra cash for asthetics/wheels/hookers/blow/holiday/house deposit/shopping/light up a fire/etc etc
The liquid hydrogen turbopump is slightly larger than an automobile engine (weighing approximately 700 lb) and produces nearly 70,000 hp (52.2 MW).
based on my experience with the clio i offer you the following advice:
if it sold for $63k in 2004 it is now worth $23k and will be worth $3.50 in two years time.
depreciation for european cars does not obey the laws of reason, logic or common sense. apart from that, they're pretty good. the wine bottle holder in the clio is a nice touch, and the boot holds plenty of crossoints. i'm kinda bummed that i didnt get the one with the cheese holder tho.

Interesting take, but if anything it seems that based on the HUGE popularity (currently that is) that the MKV GTI and R32 actually stands a chance at reasonable resale. As long as they continue to be popular and the shape and specs don't chnage dramatically they could do well in 3 years time ??????

nah mate. as soon as the warranty is up, it will drop like a dog.
did you know that you can find 2003 renault clio sport without too much trouble for 16k? that's a $34k car dropping 53% in 3yrs. golf's are better, but not by much.
r32 is nice to drive I wouldn't spend the money on one.
as for the polo they feel much cheaper than the gold and are much smaller. better to spend the money on a lower spec'ed golf.
I drive them nearly every day to deliver to dealers.
cheers
