I like this thread, I'll be looking for another car when I get back soon. All good advise.

My last experience buying a car was when I bought the Evo back 1999, rocking up in a bunky looking S13. I bought my car off the first dealer who let me test drive almost every car in the lot :D. My approach was I'll buy any car but I want to test drive them all, some dealers were real pricks. Though this approach maybe differ in Aust.

Why shouldn't they be able to return me a quote via fax?
Every dealer I've contacted through carsales thus far has called me and tried to harass me on the phone into accepting their deals. I'm keen to avoid that.

be interested to see how that goes jizz. I personally would love to fax or email negotiations then all i do is turn up & drive away but I dont think it's the right approach , phone and face to face will always be more effective, will always yield a better result imo.But hey it's a new world, keep us tuned in .

I'm not planning to "negotiate via fax or email" - I'm faxing a letter saying "I want a quote on this type of vehicle, and if you can provide it and can do a good deal please fax a quote to X" sorta thing.

              yeah.

do they really have to sell you a car? for the profit they'll make it's better if they let you buy it from someone else instead of put up with communicating via fax/email

light a fire in there lot, then say your a coon and its a coon fire and they cant put it out by law, call the media and tell them your a coon and the WHITE MAN is took your tribal land for their car yard and now they are trying to put out the fire that you lit so that the souls of your people can go into the dreamtime. then tell em youl call it all off for a cheap deal on a car

i did this when i bought my S15 and it worked a charm

So sending one fax, followed by a deposit and cheque and having someone pick up the car when its ready is too much work? Why is that?

As I said I'm not communicating via fax/email.. I'm simply requesting a quote. I'll call them and buy the car if its good.

Obviously dissing the idea is the new bandwagon so I'll just do it and let you know how it turns out.

because, are sales people sub human or something? they're selling cars to make money. everyone thinks they can screw sales people down so they have to sell at cost or below.

what are you talking about and what has this got to do with my approach?

if they don't want the business or don't think they can afford to quote low, then they just don't send me a quote, yeah?

                          i suppose.

i'm just suggesting you might get a better deal with a straight forward approach.

I dunno what you mean though.. it sounds like the easiest way for both of us? I just send them one quote request and all they have to do is respond or not and I'll get in touch if I want to buy from them. Surely they do this everyday with insurance companies buying new replacements etc?

I don't see why calling them and haggling and doing the whole negotiating thing is easier on them or me.

because haggling and negotiating is what they do for a living. if you just wanna get the best price out of them then that's just an insult to most sales people - their job is to sell the car for the best possible price and by accepting your faxback offer then they're admitting to their boss that they suck.

if you're not prepared to play their games then why should they play yours? that'll be the way they see it.

as above.. while it sounds good in theory.. a fax may only give you a very rough ballpoint. Face to face is where it's really at, when you get read the salesperson and they can read you.

The mass approach might work a little to start you off.. you never know, you might find some n00b sales person wanting to clear a sale (or another) that month on that model to look impressive to their boss and/or mr mazda.. who knows.
