Ken. I bought one 2 weeks ago as well and quite honestly, I like it a lot. Mine has no power steer so I don't know how that effects the feel but I like it. It lets me know whats happening. I just bumped the timing up to 7deg and put in a K&N panel filter in the standard airbox and it feels heaps better. Add to that 98 octane fuel and it almost gets rid of that flatspot they all have just off cruise and under medium acceleration just off idle.
Have a drive of mine if you like next time we go riding.
Its quite amazing what a few small almost no cost mods will do to a car like that, my old 1994 corolla (1.6L 16V 4AFE) I bumped the timing from 10 deg to 17deg (made sure it was not pinging on standard unleaded & then religiously ran it on 95 octane PULP) & fitted a free flowing filter (still standard exhaust etc). Went a lot better & returned better economy as well.
No ill effects, I had it for 3 years like that & just sold it recently…. Was a fantastic car.
I've considered bumping the timing on the Mirage, but then thought better play it safe because if it starts pinging the GF wouldn't know it and just keep on driving it. Will probably drop in a filter etc.... gave it a service on the weekend, new spark plugs, oil and oil filter checked the timing etc.
Should have it back this afternoon. Dropped it off to the body shop on Tuesday afternoon to get the rear quarter panel re-painted as it was scratched up. All paid for by the caryard.
The standard timing is 4-7deg. All we did was just put it at the top of the manufacturers recommended spec. I have read that a lot of people go to 10deg but we decided to be safe. Picked up 2fwfw with the timing. Now makes a whopping 54.6kw at the wheels.
I also picked up a spare engine on the weekend for free, including manifolds, injectors, flywheel etc. And could be getting a 4G93 throttle body for it soon as well. Simple bolt on mod that will give it a little more go combined with an adjustable fuel pressure reg. All still with standard exhaust. I also have access to a ported head with adjustable cam gear and headers if I want them. Problem is I don't want to spend the money or lose the "standardness" of it.
I reckon you'd be selling your soul and you'd need a new forum name. :p

Its got to the stage where its not worth anything, and costs are starting to mount up keeping it going.
Not talking about keeping that. Buy a Xsara, they were a steal when new IMO and a serious bargain now.

At least we are talking about modifying "something". But its all a little bit more subtle than what we are used to. To be honest, I'm starting to get the bug again after driving it for 2 weeks. I almost look for an excuse to go for a drive. Sad I know.

I dont think i could ever not own at least some type of performance car to tinker around with / waste money on / get pissed off with & sometimes enjoy.
problem is i started to own way too many of them.....
GF picked up the Mirage yesterday, I had a look when I got home and they morons have gotten the colour completely wrong... the door is a nice white colour and the rear 3/4 panel is a really shithouse cream colour.... how fucking hard is it to match white??? It's not like a metallic pearl colour or anything, just plain jane westinghouse white!
