Anyone here after cheap lap timing and dataloging?

    Guys,

I thought I'd put this in the Motorsport section rather than the forsale as it may be missed there.

Most of you would already know about RaceChrono:

    http://www.racechrono.com/download/?lang=en

This software runs on a many Mobile phones (Symbian S60 and now Windows mobile too!). To get the most of of the timing you really need a GPS with 5Hz aquisition rate. Most standalone GPS's and all mobile phone / pda GPS's are 1Hz making them OK but not preferable as you just don't get a high enough sample rate.

RaceChrono already has most if not all Australiaion tracks preconfigured ready to go. So if you want to lap time, just rock up to the track and start timing, no beacon to setup. You get sector timing, braking data, virtual best laps, overlay laptimes of the local track pro, exports to google maps etc.

Now onto the sales pitch. I have been looking locally for 5Hz GPS receivers and haven't really found anything under $120 + Postage. So I have sourced a batch from OS. I'm going to make these available to the PF crew for $89 delivered (Express Post). I'm targeting a regular sale price of $99.00 + Postage ($9.90)

I should take delivery of the sample unit by Saturday for testing and eval.

If anyone is interested please PM or reply here.

Mods, if you think this post is inappropriate please move to forsale area.

    UPDATE:

OK I did an extended 40 min test log. Basically a round trip of Western Sydney, with a mix of freeway and citty driving and the logging is excellent. The only place where is trips up is when you are at a complete stop, I guess is due to the margin of error with the GPS system. This is not going to be a problem at the track as if you at complete standstill then you have other problems!!

Here's a snippet of three seconds on the freeway:

These GPS receivers have bluetooth? Certainly interested if so, much cheaper than an AIM device.

Install the file using Nokia (or whatever your phone is) application install tool on the PC.

RaceChrono is awesome, accuracy is obviously dependent on the GPS unit/signal but if this is pretty good smokes a normal lap timer, with so much more info at hand.

Being able to 'virtually' run round the track again overlaying one lap with another is great, really handy at working out just 'why' your fastest lap was exactly that

Windows doesn't have an application for a sisx file ...
I can put the sisx file on the phone, but where?

I'd be interested to hear more. I've got an N95. Do I need anything extra to get the receiver going or does it just run on batteries?

Works with N95 fine. Need to keep the phone open and reasonble sky line of site also to work well. I made a bracket that DS tapes to the tank allows me to pull the phone in and out each session, even check lap times on the fly if feel crazy enough. lol.

I also have an E90 and it works great, to a point. Basically the 5Hz GPS's have a much greater data capture rate. 5 times per sec versus 1. You can see much greater detail when braking into corners, corner exit speeds, etc.

Some hardcore racers are going 10 and 20Hz but these things are expsensive and overkill IMHO.

                      Yes Bluetooth.

If there's demand I may even look at bluetooth gyro's and OBDII modules. Then you will have a poor mans motec.

Yes battery or 12VDC from the car. The only other thing you need is a Symbian Phone, Windows Mobile Phone/PDA with bluetooth.
