Nico was saying in a post race interview that his race was more or less ruined because he just missed the safety car pit in thing that Ricciardo was so lucky to get.

The opportunity to pit under the safety car arose and he grabbed/took/accepted/seized it. He just as easily could have been indecisive and missed it, credit where credit is due eh because it set the scene for his win.

lol - everyone dived straight for the pits when the SC board came out. Credit to all of them for doing the obvious thing!
It's not a case of credit where credit is due for seizing an opportunity others missed due to indecision. The front four didn't get the chance to pit due to the timing of the SC. It was just luck.

If he didn't take that opportunity to follow button in he wouldn't be in F1. There would be no excuse for not coming in which is why everyone- even the spastics- who could did. He was lucky to get that break and it was by no means his defining moment in the race. The next 60 laps were.

Yep especially the first few laps on the slicks in patchy conditions. He could have easily done a Perez/Vettel/Grosjean and fucked it but he didn't. The next 60 laps he drove exceptionally well and took advantage of the situation he was given.

did the 4 leaders miss the pit entry at the crash? or just the actual safety car board? I would have taken the gamble as a team manager seeing the crash that there would be a SC, regardless if the board had been deployed yet

It's important to remember that 4 cars were just past pit entry for the first safety car and the driver at the back of that queue was Alonso who in probably the fourth best car was leading with 3 laps to go. That safety car didn't define the podium, it was the quick passes that Danny Ric, Alonso and Hamilton managed that got them there.

How much downforce was tuned into those Mercs though? I couldn't believe they strugged to pass the STR!

Yep for a while I thought vergne was in for a top 5 finish he did well to hold off and then drive away from Rosberg for quite a few laps.

I was hoping Maldo was going to understeer into that other driver on consecutive laps

Hard to split them, Hamilton did bloody well but few marks off for his clumsy first lap incident. To make those tires last and defend Alonso probably takes it narrowly from Dan. Also interesting to note Dan was missing part of his rear wing in Q3 which may explain why he lost out to Vettel.

Pretty hard not to pick Ricci, but I would probably say the same. I still don't quite know how he managed to keep 2nd with those tyres.
