It didn't really. 4 drivers were caught out - Rosberg, Bottas, Vettel and Alonso. Rosberg lost the most as he had a 10 second lead and he was right with the lead pack at the end, I'd actually say that if he had come in a bit earlier he had a good shot at winning. Willaims/Bottas stuffed the strategy with the hard tyres. Vettel stuffed his with the spin and just being slow (and he was slow through the middle portion of the race) and not making the passes he had to. Alonso, who was at the back of that pack and driving a ferrari was in the lead with 3 laps to go. So of that group the guy at the back of the pack who missed the pitlane and driving the worst car came within a bees dick of winning the race.Originally posted by hrd View PostYep, Alonso.
dunno about that!
alot easier to not have to chase down a Mercedes that was already dissapearing into the distance. He had a 10.5sec lead over second place by the 8th lap! While Smiley was stuck in 6th unable to pass Button who is pretty handy in the wet, and therefore losing 2sec a lap to Rosberg. I think he jumped Button in that SC pitstop too - is that right? I remember them dicing on track afterwards, but i think it was Button on inters trying to pass Dan on the correct tyre choice of slicks...
And RBR getting the break on the lap 8 crash was the reason they could run the 3 stop strategy while Alonso had to try and go long on two stops to get track position back. Same for Hamilton who was right on Rosberg's heels after the SC. Rosberg tried the 3 stop thing from the same kind of place after the SC and it left him behind. So the Lap 8 crash was the reason Alonso and Hamilton were sitting ducks on ~30 lap old tyres at the end after running the compromised strategey, while the lap 8 crash gifted RBR the track position to run the optimum strategy instead of the leaders. It totally defined the race.
Absolutely the timing of the first safety car hurt the front 4 but it was what those drivers (and Riccardo and Hamilton) made of the situation that defined the race.

Rosberg got double screwed by the SC and a slow pitstop which cost 2 more spots. He had to try something different to ALonso to try and get past him after being held up by JEV while the track was drying.Originally posted by Rona View PostWhy? Rosberg was screwed by the safety car as well but wasn't forced to go long.
yeah but running the same strategy wouldn't have ever got him in front of the Red Bull. They'd have to catch and pass him on pace. That's not going to happen. On such a difficult track to overtake, track position is important. Stopping less got him that track position. Pretty simple. But it was a risky strategy to hope the tyres lasted from their compromised track positions and very early 1st pitstop.Originally posted by Rona View PostAlonso could have easily pushed harder on the softs and pitted 1 more time too.

That's kinda my point. Without the SC he was cruising out in front again. Untouchable! The SC defined the result.
Button was in the best position at the SC, but they screwed up risking inters again presumably in the hope of rain which didn't come. So McLaren defaulted the best position to Dan at lap 8, and he guess what - he won it. SC determined the result.
They were certainly helped by Wiliams genius strategists showing once again they have NFI how to win. He was the guy in position and with the pace to challenge Dan, but they're the worst strategists in the field!
After that all RBR and Dan had to do was not fuck up.

Among the top tier drivers it was Dan who made the passes, yes of course tyres came into it but the RB is hardly the best performer at the moment. The SC gave him the opportunity along with a few others but it was Dan and the team who capitalised on the opportunity best of all. That and the passes won the race for him.Richard's DatsunZ lappin LakesidZ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47OSh...&feature=g-upl

Yes passes got him the win but he also punched in fastest lap after fastest lap when he had to to build up a lead. Some of it reminded me of Webber's win in 2010. No one has really talked about Mercedes this weekend. They didnt seem to be able to pull out their mercurial race pace for the first time this year.
