                yes still a thing, without it as a stepping stone, makes it very hard to progress in European open wheeler classes that count.
                a f5000 championship will mean nothing to the fia for points towards a super license.

                          The love for open wheelers is no longer there in Aus. Anything above Formula Ford just dies. The F4 is a legitimate car. Several different chassis constructors, engine suppliers, etc. All FIA crash-tested. Very similar philosophy to F3, but slightly scaled down in size.

                            F3 is cost,
                            F4 can be done reasonably cheaply now (you can buy cars, where previously you could only lease from Cams). but to be fast you would struggle without a talented engineer, its not a father and son type race car.
                            F4, control low stressed engine etc
