Well it seems the Vinales Yamaha relationship has gotten even worse with Yamaha standing him down for this weekends race. He will not be replaced. I’m guessing this has something to do with what happened on the restart of last race when he had to start from pitlane. Benched for the rest of the year??

According to a brief statement released by the team, Vinales was withdrawn from this weekend’s race in Austria due to “unexplained irregular operation of the motorcycle by the rider during last weekend”. and will not be replaced.

“Yamaha‘s decision follows an in-depth analysis of telemetry and data over the last days,” the team explained.

“Yamaha‘s conclusion is that the rider‘s actions could have potentially caused significant damage to the engine of his YZR-M1 bike which could have caused serious risks to the rider himself and possibly posed a danger to all other riders in the MotoGP race.”

It sure is a crazy situation, and Yamaha must believe, without any shadow of a doubt, that Maverick tried to damage the engine, and thus consider him a risk to their property

Ive watched the footage of him purposely riding it on the limiter on the approach to turn 9, and then again, free revving it with the clutch pulled as he enters pitlane, and while its definitely not the correct way to treat your engine, its not what appears to be damning footage, especialy when you compare it to many limiter bashing celebrations as the winner pulls into parc ferme after a race.

Its not as if he free revved it on the limiter for a minute to intentionally fuck the thing.

I suspect that Yamaha management are so fed up with his inconsistency, and perceived disrespect, that they are choosing to rip the bandage off asap, by using the limiter bashing as an excuse.

Either way, its almost unheard of to see a rider dumped mid season, and its a bad look for all concerned.

Now, my mind goes to who will they put in his place, if they do, in fact, decide to bench him for the rest of the season? Franky is still out for a few races so he cant be moved up with 1/4raro, and Cal wont be moved up due to not having the outright pace to deserve a works bike ride, and unless there are no clashes with WSBK, Garrett Gerloff wont get the call up, so is it conceivable that they would ask Vale to move back to his old bike to ensure the works team have 2 bikes on the grid until Franky is able to ride? So many questions....

The fact that the bike was running fine and he pulled in on the last lap and didn't finish the race on top of the silly limiter actions, plus the last 3 laps he did were 5 seconds slower than the rest of the race after being passed by Crutchlow, sounds like he just lost his shit and was taking out his anger on the bike. No team manager puts up with that childish crap in a multi-million $ effort, these guys are paid top coin to ride these things to the best of their ability, and there's clearly nothing wrong with the base bike setup as he won on the thing earlier this year and FQ doesn't have any issues on it. I'd say the bloke needs to see a psychologist to be honest.

You are definitely right about the last bit. The red mist sure does affect some more than others, and Maverick has always seemed to blow hot or cold a lot. Although, at this level, I would be surprised if he didnt already have a mind coach...

Im sure it will all come out in the wash eventually

With the talent available in teh lower classes at the moment Binales should have been dumped at the end of last season

The guy i kinda feel sorry for is Petrucci, but at least he had a decent run in the top class and scored a win

Apparently Petrux has been offered a ride by KTM in their Dakar program. His size wont be as much as a handicap there too

I am just copy and pasting the following comments from Maverick...it certainly sounds like he is claiming an issue with the bike...it will be interesting to see what comes from this, as even though its probably a highly unlikely claim, if it turns out to be true, the Japanese team will be feeling a lot of shame...

The nine-time MotoGP race winner was blunt in his criticism of Yamaha after the race, saying he had “no confidence” in what he perceived to be a wildly inconsistent package, and suggesting a clutch issue which caused the stall.

Notably, in separate comments, he also said that his dashboard kept showing a ‘pit lane’ message, which was apparently a mistake but did explain why he finished the race through the pit lane.

However, he also reported an apparent engine issue, similar to that which he experienced in qualifying the day prior.

“I had a few problems on the bike,” said Viñales, post-race.

“I don’t know why, but nearly all the laps I had ‘pit lane’ [showing on the dashboard].

“[Then], the same thing happened as in the qualifying. I don’t know why but when I opened the gas, the bike was making failing, like ‘boh-boh-boh-boh’ [engine stuttering sounds].

“So I thought I had some kind of problem, but I kept running and running and running and it was OK, but in the last laps it kept doing it more.

“Also it was very strange, because I didn’t receive the track limits warning or long lap [penalty message on the dash]. I did it [took a long lap] because I saw it on the main straight [pit board]. If not, I wouldn’t do it.

“Maybe when I saw ‘pit lane’ it was actually track limits. I don’t know. But on my dashboard all the time was ‘pit lane’, ‘pit lane’. Every lap.

“That’s why at the end I stopped. Because I don’t know, maybe I am losing oil or something.”

I must say I was surprised to see Maverick standing at turn 3 with a couple of his crew, dressed in Yamaha team kit, an smiling like nothing has happened...

Marcs shoulder sure appears to be giving him some more grief than usual in the first practice session

Crutchlow WILL most likely take over Vinales seat, as it looks like Vinales will be dumped completely in the next few days.
Jake Dixon is rumoured to take Cals seat at Petronas.

Yep, its certainly looking like there is almost no chance of Maverick ever riding a Yamaha MotoGP bike again...very sad and unnecessary way for ti to all end.

Even though I understand Jake rides for their Moto2 team, I cant say he has done much this year to earn that privilege, and I wouldnt be surprised if they decide on somebody else, although who, I do not know

Cal will almost certainly be on Mavericks bike, although given its his swan song, I would personally prefer Vale to be given that honour.

                      We shall see...

I watched the onboard video that MotoGP put up from Vinales’ last couple of laps last week. It looked looked like he was frustrated with the bike and held onto the limiter 0.5 seconds longer than he should have and gave it a short rev coming into the pits. He wasn’t sitting on the limiter for half the straight or something like that.

Certainly no worse than victory celebrations.

He probably shouldnt have done it but it appears Yamaha were just looking for any excuse to get rid of him early.
