Talk to me about 4JJ1 conversions

A mate of mine is thinking about a 4JJ1 conversion for his 60 series, and Im the one thinking about all the nitty gritty of making it work.

Thinking that the easiest way around the conversion will be to use the pre-2012 gearbox which puts the transfer case on the drivers side, and therefore the same side as the front diff. This would probably also mean using at least the pre-2012 sump as well if it has sculpted area for diff clearance.

It looks like the 2011 engines introduced a common rail system, so that year might be good crossover for sourcing parts.

I havent done much high pressure diesel stuff, so not really sure on things further back than the engine itself. Also not sure on how tightly the dash and ECM are connected, along with things like immobilisers etc on various models.

Currently pondering buying a wreck to get all the transplant bits, but with the various lockdowns and stuff haven't had a chance to really get into any of them at a wreckers to look at things like immobilisers, ECM etc. So anyone know which model might be ideal for the starting point?

Maybe I am mistaken but I thought all 4JJ1 engines were common rail?

Perhaps they are, but a few of the reviews around 2011 talk about the face lift in conjunction with common rail.

Either way, would be looking at common rail anyway.

Not sure if its the same in the utes but in the 4jj1 trucks some of the early models for a short while had a one bolt crank pulley.
They then went to a 4 bolt crank pulley.
The 4 bolt seems to last longer/be stronger (mind you the single bolt still gets a shitloads of km's)
I know when doing engine drive fridge motors it can be problematic with the single bolt ones.

Probably irrelevant info, but somehow I remember this almost useless shit and not my kids birthdays..

I don't think that made it across to the cars and utes, did a quick check with friends who have 4JJ1s and none of them are 4 bolt, including a brand new MUX.

I wouldn't mind knowing how easy it is to retrofit one of these into a older vehicle that never came with one. Do you know if it has been done much before?

it seems common enough that you can buy a standalone hardness for them, and even an adaptor to fit the bellhousing to a patrol box

Yeah, was just looking at that earlier today: https://www.dieselconversionsaus.com...=false&q=false

Seems like a reasonable thing, although probably something that could be done relatively easily with some time.

Got a few Thai mates that are right into these engines, one is making 1000 on a stock block in his drag pickup, another making 600 in his long tail boat.

I'll ask about stand alone harnesses cause Iam sure if they are available here they will be a lot cheaper than that dieselconversionaus link.

From a bit of googling i wonder if they are using the wiring harness out of an excavator or commercial vehicle. The actual harnesses look relatively similar: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002622126096.html

Sumitomo do make wiring looms, looks to be a great buy if it is applicable.

i don't understand using such a small engine in a heavy car. sure they can be made more powerful, but at the end of it, haven't you just got a slightly different spin on a 3L patrol? i'm genuinely curious as to why old mate wants to go this way.

Because it is infinitely more capable than a 2F with a 4sp box behind it, they are relatively accessible engines and dont cost stupid money like HD or FZs, and not requiring silly amounts of modification to fit like a Duratec or Cummins.

on top of that, they wont explode like a 3L patrol, and will probably make more power to boot
