Being stainless it will grow when at operating temp and then will be the right length. I remember on my commodore I made the exhaust a bit short, tip was 10mm shy of sticking out of bumper. Once up to operating temp it was flush and after a thrashing it would stick out 20-30mm.

I recently designed up some hitches for the earthmoving gear and all the plates and some machining was finished so I started putting them together.

And to try give some perspective on size:

        and wazzed away.

far from perfect, but im pretty happy for what amounts to the first real welding ive done since falling ill last year.

things were going great really. ran out of puff to finish the job, but got back to it today. and managed to bust my furick cup

soldiered on with a lot less pretty weld on the other end.

then set about working on the brackets and other half of the vbands... ran out of puff again.
Fuck man if I could tig even half as good as that I would be stoked. There is a reason why I don't tig.

        Don't mention the adBlocker !!

Pre heating helps a lot with cast iron welding. doesnt need to be cherry red, but hot enough to cook a egg on is good take your time to heat it up thou. Suggest using the oven if they fit heat them up to about 150c, take out weld them put them back in the oven and slowly cool them down

U sure they are cast iron and not cast steel? Cast iron is very brittle and not what I would think they would use for headers. Cast steel on the other hand is more likely and also much easier to weld. Pre-heat as mentioned and make sure u remove at least a mm of the outer layer where u r going to weld. If it spits and farts when welding and burns away then grind more. I have done quite a few gates off turbo housings and I would imagine it would be similar.

Yeah, I don't know what amps it's running but it's a WIA fabricator (400A) and I had it on C3.

That's the old mans helmet, the one I use is the same but plain black. I hate that u have to keep turning them on as I'm constantly back and forth from office to workshop and if I'm gone to long I go and flash myself on the first weld. My new helmet I have at home has no on button but I'm not going to take it to work and ruin it with mig welding.

                  Yeah you are right cast steel. They are ceramic coated so grinding back is a given. Starting to think I should just sell these and get some eghey/XS style SS header for cheaps :rolleyes;

The surface layer usually is full of contamination from the casting process. The mound sand usually has oils and what not added so it holds its shape and that must mix with the metal at the surface layer. I have modified headers which have been ceramic coated and weirdly enough never had a problem with welding with the coating. It sort of melts under the coating however I would have no idea of the weld integrity doing that and grinding it off would be the safest option.

This was the first thing I learnt ... Still forget it every now and then. But yeah every time the helmet is out on press the on button. Not even check. Just go through the motions of pressing the on button lol. I have the black shell also, this one was a present from the Mrs after I broke mine at Tate throwing it against a wall trying to do overhead stick welds lol

Can anyone give me an idea what I'm doing wrong trying to use my foot pedal ? It has a bunch of pins rather than the two pins the trigger switch has. But when I try to use it, it just seems to sit on the background rate... So instead of 50 amps it gets to 10 .... What am I missing guys ?

Does it do the same thing at using the trigger switch? On my pedal it has two cables, one for an on/off function and the other is the 3 wires for the potentiometer. A wire was broken in my pedal lead and it did the same function as just pressing the trigger. I rewired the pedal using the single phase power cables and good as gold. I think crack had to do the same to his also.

I'll go have a look tomorrow, but it's only got the one plug, and memory tells me it has 5 pins ?

I have the trigger set on 4 trigger. Press once and hold, then ramp up when I release... Press and hold for ramp down and release... The pedal turns it on and turns it off again when I press it, but it has no grunt to it... Just like the background amps.... I'm probably explaining things all ducked up lol

If the details are correct, the car running this setup ran a 10.something second pass.
                                Mind blown

Also puts all the welds in this thread to total shame.
