The colour is right. It's amazing how many newbies get it all grey and crusty looking and I'm not entirely sure why/how.

hahaha, most of my staino exhaust welds are grey and crusty;Originally posted by Commotion View PostThe colour is right. It's amazing how many newbies get it all grey and crusty looking and I'm not entirely sure why/how.
Old thoriated tungsten that has welded alloy and everything else sharped on a grinder that has had timber/aluminium/steel ground on it
Welding filler wire grabbed from the shelf covered in shit, maybe wiped with my dirty shirt if I can be fucked
Piping wiped clean with my shirt, dressed with a grinder
Some sort of argon flow between 8-15lpm
Lazy wrong amperage cause I dont like stopping and will just persist
Its all about giving a fuck, I did a turbo intake and if everything was clean clean clean it welded up straw blue like the above but for a dump pipe under a car thats getting rattle canned black, no time for making it look nice.

So I didn't quite get the penetration of the weld I was hoping for which gives me a few options... This is for one exhaust port exit merging into the log.
1. Leave it.
2. Redo it, more amps, better bevel.
3. Continue as is but re-weld once it's on the exhaust flange with more amps and back purging.
4. Attempt to weld inside.
Anyone?

Yeah I'm with commotion.
Bevel and dual run will improve the peno but you will have to purge and you won't see a significant increase in strength ( mainly for the part you are making)
Imo leave it .... :D

So managed to get out into the shed today. Well got started yesterday but Anna took of with little Leo for a craft day, leaving me free to get stuck in for a few hours on a project she has wanted done for month.
We have a tiny house. And finding a good sized dining table has proven tough. So I set about making one to the dimensions her ladyship decided were proper.
I have had the steel for this table for like 6months, I just havnt been able to pull it all together.
Proved very rusty on the welder :/ it really is true what they say. Weld every dam day. If you don't you start getting rusty fast. Oh well. All the dodgy was hidden quite nicely with the paint lol.
I decided to paint the table top and the legs separately just so it was easier. Then I'll weld the legs on and only need a little touch up with the paint.
I also have a little plan to fit adjustable feet, but I need to go "borrow" some bits from work.
And the top is going to be some pine from bunnings that is on special at the moment lol.

Just went out to the shed to shut things up and turn it all off.
Dumb cunt here had rested the legs on the touch dry frame paint. Course it was touch dry, not leaning on dry and now they are stuck together...

Generally hold the torch with the dominant hand ... However at my old work th boss was obsessive that all his welders could weld both hands. He had a guy years ago who lost an arm. Took him ages to learn how to weld again. Since then the boss has made it a regular thing in the shop that all the guys can weld passable with both hands. It comes in very handy when doing out of position stuff also. And helps when welding in a mirror when you have to reverse all your movements lol

I posted a pic earlier (much earlier) of a vband flange weld on my exhaust for the rocket Ronda. That was done both left and right. I didn't even realise it at the time, just did what worked. Only realised I'd done half of it Cookey when I was looking at the dimes ... Going both directions.
Like anything so long as you practice it works pssabky well lol. And helps get into awkward spots and such .... Not a "needed" skill at all. But comes in pretty handy sometimes
