Digs dirt. Effectively tractor drawn scraper. Does it quite well but is expensive to manufacture so that's what I have been working on. Building them more efficiently. Just gives me the shits that I can sit down to fabricate something and end up knocking it out in less than half the time the boilermakers (who's job is welding shit) take to do it.Originally posted by 9triton View Postwhat does it do ?

Think they do laser/gps leveling for building sites. There's 2 going round and round at work behind some big 8 wheel tractors. Judging by the sound they take bulk hp to pull along.

predominantly its for water control, whether for irrigation or to shed water after a rain event. Typically where that vid was taken they have about a foot of nice fertile top soil and then clay and other materials under that so they strip the top soil and stock pile then level the subsurface then spread the top soil back over the top. It makes a massive difference to crop yields and can prevent loosing crops from too much water.Originally posted by Salim Mehajer View PostThat's awesome why would I want to remove topsoil?

Yep they take big power. Unfortunately tractor manufacturers are developing tractors with more and more horsepower however they can still only handle the same vertical drawbar load. We had a couple of big machines that were designed and built as i started and they were too big, the tractors were struggling to support the weight, had troubles with spinning tires on rims and also troubles supplying enough hydraulic oil flow. The new john deer tractors have a piss weak articulation design and one tractor split in half. They claim the bucket did it but it split at the bottom of the casting which is has a compressive load induced by the drawbar weight so i disagree.Originally posted by da9jeff View PostThink they do laser/gps leveling for building sites. We have four models now and i'm confident in the loading they apply to the tractors so i don't foresee any issues however i see other manufacturers building bigger and bigger so it will be interesting to see the havoc they wreak.
The ideal prime mover for big loads is an articulated dump truck with its body removed and a goose neck attachment to get the load right in the middle of the 4 rear tires. That rear end will take more than the bucket will throw at it, they have plenty of pulling power with the 6wd and they have huge hydraulic flow.
Edit: the biggest machine we built which went to WA behind a Case 600HD, once it had loaded the machine in a lower gear and then had gone up a couple to haul out of the pit, was using 80% of the available engine power to do so. It was probably only a 10% gradient, i was a bit shocked. The machine was capable of lifting a max of 40tonne of dirt and the machine itself weighed about 18tonne but still thats rolling on wheels, nothing dragging on the ground.
