    6 speed for the datto

    Special tool # 131234213






    Works like this (but with the addition of a piece of the original datto gearbox bolted up to the rear of the engine)



    Just need to weld it up now.

    we did this for someone through work, and im in the process of doing it for myself....

    my cuts will be further towards the box to utilise all the shifting points on the original toyota box....

    when the old dog at work did it.... he migged the crap outa it after hitting it with a bunch of heat from the oxy... then went over the welds with more heat and tig to "bring out the bubbles" (these are my descriptions of what happened lol)

    turned out really clean but will need a few of the bolt holes cleaned or re done

      I measured it al up, and the spot I've chosen is the only place where the bellhousings aligned well enough to not need some sort of added plate to join them.

      Mine will be welded with the oxy :huh:

        yeah the casings we had used were already cut and machined elsewhere, we just did the welding.

        The place they had chosen worked really well for flat plate to weld to, but we had to weld up a few of the bolt holes, but they had to be re drilled and she was all apples.

        the way i plan mine i will most likely need a intermediate plate welded to the box to give the bell something to weld to because there are significant size differences.

          All done - end result is perhaps a little more "utilitarian" than beautiful, but seems to have worked OK.

          I used oxy to do the welding, and the mis-match in diameter of the two bellhousing halves resulted in going through stacks of filler rod in an attempt to fill the "holes". Also resuted in slightly "lumpy" welds. Next time, I'll cut the bellhousings slightly different to get them to line up better.

              I find it truly amazing that someone can cut and shut a bellhousing at home. It always came across as a dark art to me. Well done.

                An hour or two a night, spread over two nights. I've never used MIG or TIG, so I don't know any better :knock:

                Hoonboy - the trick was making the jig. Once I worked out how to keep it lined up, the rest was just welding.

                All I need to do now is get the mounting face of the bellhousing machined. I purposefully made the whole assembly a mm or so "longer" than I calculated it needed to be so I could take a little off to account for any warping or movement and get the mounting face perfectly parallel to the face on the other end - ie the good face on the S15 part of the gearbox.

                I suppose I should start looking for a working S15 6 speed as well.

                    Although there are plenty of modern alternatives, good ol' oxy welding is still a viable alternative for home tinkerers. The only real drawback I find is how slow it is compared to MIG or TIG.

                            What 180B ? Oh yeah, that's right,I've got one of them hidden away somewhere haven't I

                            To be honest, I haven't done a lot to it lately, between working on the old 1600, working on a mate's 28' boat restoration project, running around after my kids and running around after 2 parents with Alzheimers - I just don't seem to get around to the 180B There is so much that's almost finished, but nothing is completely done.

                            I really want to get stuck into it this spring / summer - its sitting there on the rotisserie in primer, all rust fixed and just about all straightened. A weekend or two of hard work and it will be ready for paint. The whole modified 200B front end is done, just needs painting. The supercharger stuff is finished, just needs painting. Engine - I have all the parts (forged rods / pistons / valves / rebuild stuff like bearings), just needs a bit of machining and I reckon I could build it in a weekend.

                            So yeah, plan is paint later this year then start assembly. The same plan I had about this time last year :knock:

                              i think the thicker alloy worked in his favour with the oxy welding, bit messy at start but once ground down looks ok. fingers crossed the cunt doesn't crack at all.
