The Fiance and I have some really nerdy ideas for bride/groom cake toppers for our wedding. What program would I need to use to something up so you can quote on it?

Anything that'll create an STL file.

The general opinion is that it's a pre-emptive strike by 3DS to delay and kill the Form 1 printer before they lose any customers. As no Form 1 printers have been shipped, nobody except Form Labs insiders know for sure if it does violate the patent.
3DS is the 800 pounmd gorilla in the 3d Printer industry, and had pretty much tied up the entire high resolution stereo lithography market. The 3DS printers and consumables are almost an order of magnitude more expensive than the Form 1 products, and the output quality is on a par. Their customers hate them due to threats they've issued when any user dares to use anything but 3DS supplied (and overpriced) UV cure material in their printers. They plan to shortly offer a new printer with RFID equipped UV cure polymer cartridges that will guarantee they have a closed market like the printer manufacturers have with their overpriced chipped printer ink cartridges.

Good timing - I needed some clips to hold the panelling in the boot of the Fraser, the stuff that covers the fuel tank.
I was sure I'd never find the ones that I really wanted so I designed them up in Autocad and made them on the 3D printer.
There's two, one for the 22.8 mm tubes and the smaller for the 19.6 mm tubes. (they are powder coated so a little larger than the standard diameters.)
It only took an hour from start to finish and now the prototypes have been made I can quickly make the rest of them. Very satisfying.

Nice work Bill 3D printing is a dream come true for me. Being able to get a useful working part from a CAD model just ticks all the boxes!

I'm expecting my dual head Leapfrog Creatr this week.

UPS has already pinged me for the handling/GST costs. Tracking shows it at Port Botany. I just hope it comes with some filament, if not, there will be some disappointed little faces in the house! (mine mostly!)

I expect you'll be hitting Thingiverse a lot from now on.

I'll probably have a trawl through Thingverse for the kids (they want to print horsies!) For my part, I've got a load of models and ideas already waiting to be brought into the real world. Based on the tracking, it should arrive today, it departed Botany yesterday.

Leave it in the packaging until you need it. The extruder nozzle doesn't like dust or moist filament.

Whatever next! I saw an article a week or so ago about a proposed one way trip to Mars (too expensive to bring 'em back) One of the proposals in it was to use 3D printers to create the base or parts thereof. That's the idea with the moonrock printing too. I envisage automated robot/printers doing the biz up there and when the humans arrive, they've just got to fit doors and windows to make the moonrock buildings habitable.

This 3D printing lark has a huge amount of untapped potential.

My printer arrived a couple of days ago. This evening, I might just get to print something on the bastard! Been damn busy with family/kids stuff....

Is this something you would be able to 3d print? The badge is 192mm long. What would the resolution be like? I can email you the file in near any format.

Yes though maximum length is 130mm (A bit longer if I put it diagonally across the print table) so it'd have to be made in two pieces and the resolution is about 0.2mm.
                            STL format is the go.

My machine could print it in one piece, the bed is 200x230 conservatively. The resolution is 0.2mm as well. I'm not really ready to tackle a paying job yet and I'm working interstate all this week. The thing about FDM printing (like mine and Bills) is that you won't get a completely smooth surface without some post processing (sanding and finishing) The process produces little ridges every layer and sometimes the odd lump where you weren't expecting it.

I'll happily have a crack at printing it when I get back if you're not in a hurry.

How big is the bed on yours Bill?

                                Edit - just saw, 130mm.

"The new model is something like two thousand cubic inches, developing two hundred brake-horsepower at four thousand revolutions per minute on a magnesium frame with two styrofoam seats and a total curb weight of exactly two hundred pounds."
