GAS FAB Fire pit and bbq

My mate turned 50 this year and about a year ago I told him he'd get a GAS FAB present.
I was expecting him to ask for a door or a gate or something. He eventually asked me to make a fire pit.

I was a bit disappointed as I thought that was a bit boring. So I decided looking around on the internet at fire pit ideas to make it a bit more of an interesting build.

I found a tie fighter fire pit that was about half a meter tall and made out of a gas bottle.
Sent that idea to my mate who enthusiastically said, yep, that's cool. He said, we're going to have to find a big gas bottle somewhere.

I looked at him blankly and said, Nah mate, this is GAS FAB we're talking about. It's not getting built out of a gas bottle.
The sides are 40x40 SHS and punched metal sheet. The fire box is made out of 3mm sheet, cut into gords and bent to shape. Window feature is 12mm square bar.

So yesterday I delivered him his new Tie Fighter fire pit, come bbq.

It stands 1.35m tall (he said I needed to use some creative license when I told him the wings were going to be 2m tall to be in scale) and seemed to work pretty well on the first burn. Realised early in the build that this was going to be pretty cool, so put a bit more effort into the build so that it could be used as a bit of advertising. Pretty happy with how it turned out, may not be the best thing i've fabricated, but by far it's the COOLEST thing i've fabricated.

That is awesome. I expect the grill comes out for use as fire pit? Do the wings get warm/hot too?

              Cheers guys.

nuttr, yeah the grill normally isn't in there, it's normally in his Webber.

The wings get a little warm but you can lean against them so not too hot.

May the sauce be with you. (bbq sauce that is)

I find the lack of puns in this thread disturbing.

                            That's cool as, good job.

One thing though, could it have been designed so that the wings are hinged in the middle? Then you could fold them outwards 180 degrees right out of the way, or have a lock so at 90 degrees they could be used as table to sit around for drinking, heating and eating?
I wouldn't recommend sex, drugs or insanity for everyone, but they've always worked for me...
