    Non-garrett alternatives?

Looking at a GT3071R with the smaller t3 twin-scroll exhaust housing but also considering the 3076 with the bigger twinscroll housing. Due to application I'd be looking at running the surge ported housing but that's something I might consider later if necessary.

Are there any legitimate alternatives I should be considering?

The specific application is for a CA18DET with basic head tidyup, modest cams (tomei 260/8.8 with gears) and upg valvesprings. Peak engine speed 7800rpm with 8000rpm limiter, running manual box & 3.7s, targeting 350rwhp on pump fuel around the 20psi mark. Anything more is a bonus, as long as it doesn't heavily impact response.

Get onto Will at expressparts (upstairs at scotts but you already know that). He has something similar size on his sr (in the masterpower range) making 385rwhp with standard cams, early 20's boost wise, .63 rear.

Anyone had legitimate experience with Master Power turbos? I don't know much about them and assume they're basically just "ebay" $400 turbos sold for 2-3 times the price, any comments about quality/longevity/performance appreciated.

I used a Hypergear turbo on my bike, built locally with a plain bearing Garrett core and 'china' housings. I asked for a few specific things and they built it exactly how I wanted it.

So it's fair to say that one of these is on the list. It's half the cost of the 3076/3071 specced how I want it.

This is the slightly lower spec'd turbo. Interestingly they have a boost profile as well.

Masterpower turbos are made in Brazil, based on garrett designs. I heard that it was actually some garrett engineers running it as well.

They get a really good wrap, but in the bigger turbos have been overshadowed by BorgWarner recently. Not sure about for small frame stuff. Given the stupid prices for small frame turbos second hand you would really have to consider a new MP.

theturboforums.com has heaps of people using them, speicifically the T70s, I only heard of one or two failures, but I believe they were oil feed related, rather that failure caused by the turbo.

            I'd sorta heard similar reviews.

I'm just inclined to hate them because they have such a stupid name...

The Americans seem to love the Holset HX30/HX35/HX40 range of turbos. Seem OEM spec cheap and reliable.

Interesting topic. The prices on those Master Power turbos are very tempting. Though it doesn't seem so cheap if they expire after 5 laps and have shitty response compared with a similar sized Garrett.

Problem with them is they are often mistaken with chinese rubbish. As already mentioned they have established a good name os, were designed by the guy that designed garrett and have been around for 50ish years. They also have the brazil military contract, so read into that as you will.

I know nothing about sizing but is that a little ambitious on a CA? 350rwhp seems like an awful lot for a fairly small stock motor. Would 300 be a more achievable/likely value and then stick with something that will produce power for more than 2RPM?

I'm the Australian distributor for Master Power. Obviously I'm going to give them a bit of a plug.

They're a lot better than "an overpriced ebay turbo". Where they originally got a bad wrap was from the likes of "xcess power" or some other china turbo copying them and selling them with heaps of failures. You still see a few of the T70 china copies on ebay.

With "they'll die after 5mins" theory. I've been selling these for 3 years now and only ever had one come back with an issue. That issue was an oil seal which was from running very high oil pressure on a -4 line. To Master Power's credit they repaired this under warranty and I got the customer to run a oil restrictor and never had a problem since. Master Power air freighted the parts over to me and I had this repaired and returned to the customer in 2 weeks. All of the turbos are covered by a 12 month manufacturer's warranty from the date of purchase.

As for pricing I buy directly off Master Power in Brazil so its not going through X amount of hands with everyone adding on their margin. These are the retail prices http://expressparts.com.au/master_power.asp but I'm more than happy to look after the PF guys so send me a PM for a price

Its also worth noting the recent development of Master Power's race series turbos. Definitely worth having a read of this http://masterpowerturbos.blogspot.com/ . I've got some of their new race series turbos on order with the Low Inertial Bearing System. They're also introducing forged milled titanium compressor wheels shortly. I'm hoping that these will be arriving some time in October.

They've been going through a massive development stage over the last 12-18months so they now produce everything in house. They're also spending a lot of money on R&D to further develop their race series.

I've got a Master Power S60 550hp turbo on my SR20 at the moment. It makes around the 385rwhp mark with 23psi off the top of my head. Still using standard cams as well. Off the top of my head it starts to pull hard from 3500-4000rpm. Haven't driven the car in a while now so I can't remember but I should be back at the dyno this week. With some cams in it and the ignition sorted i'll be going for 420+rwhp on pulp.
