If this helmholtz resonator box is acting to "store" additional intake volume, surely this would be a case of the OE plenum being less than an ideal volume?
It would make sense since most OE's tend to take packaging considerations over that of overall performance.

no, because it is not actually in the plenum (past the throttle body). It's not so much an additional volume as it is a sort of air spring, to damp the pulses or vibrations in the inlet ducting.
Turns out, far too much has been written about great men and not nearly enough about morons

Yuh, it tunes the organ pipe that is the inlet ductwork to alter the noises it makes and improve the flow.

Hmm, the previous owner yanked his off the inlet tract on my Supra, and blanked it with an aerosol can lid. I might chuck it back on... might be worth a kw or two.

On NA 2JZ, I know for a fact that it is worth at least a couple of kW. It took my brother-in-law a lot of time on the dyno to come up with an alternative inlet tract for the 2JZ that didn't lose power. Gaining a kW was just as hard again.

Well, chucked it back on this arvo and it feels a little smoother/more responsive down low, but that could be due to the placebo effect. I'll leave it on now anyway.
