very uncommon to get excessive valve float on an atmo engine though, much more common on a high-boosted engine with shitty springs.

Most of the valve springs you get for these fuckers will run into coil bind before the valve bumps a slug, but it is definately a possibility - especially if old mate has fitted some weird ass springs.
I've seen a head that was chopped clear through to the water jacket by the damper in the valve spring - thrashed hard & valve bounced in every gear, the damper slowly cut through the spring base untill it hit water, water mixed with oil, knob owner keeps thrashing & engine seizes.

Good to see that they have the common sense to try to commit suicide.Originally posted by TK View PostI've seen a head that was chopped clear through to the water jacket by the damper in the valve spring - thrashed hard & valve bounced in every gear, the damper slowly cut through the spring base untill it hit water, water mixed with oil, knob owner keeps thrashing & engine seizes.

I've come to the realisation that V6 Buicks suck arse. After a lengthy discussion, my engine builder, whom shall remain nameless, has agreed to make some changes for a moderate fee, which shall ensure what I can only compare to the running of the bulls. I can drive it, and when it goes bang, well, I got what I asked for. It may well hang together for 12 months if I treat it well. Next time around, if there is one, will be something else.

The fly cuts didn't appear to be on centre for where they'd been marked, and have been re done to the size of the valve and give clearance where the contact was, and look like a heaps nicer cut than the original. We"ve also gone from an ACL race series head gasket to a Cometic MLS 040'' gasket. What you said about the lifters weighing a pound each made sense and even with hardened pushrods and heavier springs and roller rockers would contribute to float compared to other engines i've had experience with. The coolant bypass has been re-fitted where it had been deleted, which i'm sure was the cause of the head gasket blowing in the first place.Originally posted by bigmuz View PostFloat also makes the valve hit in a different position to the where the flycut is centred on. I'm not saying it is in this case but it can make you scratch your head and wonder what the buidler was thinking when he did the flycuts.
What changes are going to be made?

Plenty. I got ~150 rwkW from unopened motor with ITBs and exhaust. 200 would be a doddle.Originally posted by Steve View PostWhat sort of power can be had out of a 2J NA?Proudly presenting the new foot long chocolate Subway.
