How would I go about doing a vacuum leakdown test to see if I have bent valves? Annyone have whatever it is I can borrow, or are they cheap to buy, or can I make one from a vacuum guage or what?
I haven't got the heads off yet, but want to check everything anyway, so have bought a straight edge and torque wrench and beer.

step one: cut your losses and never go back to that guy...Turns out, far too much has been written about great men and not nearly enough about morons

Has his own business as an engine machinist.
Calls himself an engine builder, but heresay is he hasn't actually done any but one, mine. Doh!
I have spoken to a solicitor and have a plan of action in place pending his response to an invoice I've given him for repairs I've had to do to his work. A negative response will result in said legal action being initiated, to the full extent of my rights and the law.
There will be a gentleman from the IAME coming to do an inspection of the engine some time this week so I have a report from someone suitably qualified should it go to court.

We came up with 232 HP at the wheels. Winds out to 6800rpm. The cam comes in at around 3800-4000 then makes good torque right through to peak power at about 6200rpm.
I pulled the heads off today and the valves all look fine there's no marks on them and no damage in any of the combustion chambers. The pistons have all been cleaned up and there's also no sign of any detonation as was claimed to be the cause of the head gasket failure in the first place. So I've put it all back together and should have it fired up in the next few days time permitting. There's some wiring I'd like to fix before I refit too much else but apart from that she looks all good.
The clutch feels heaps lighter as well, but that could be partly because it's new and I've put a little moly grease on the throwout bearing slide.

sounds good, thought of doing anything with an alloytec? (if ya wanted to keep it in the family) have zero idea what these motors are like but would have to be better than the iron donksOriginally posted by Steve View PostWe came up with 232 HP at the wheels.
