yeah you shouldn't have to change the dizzy itself. If the coil has good spark, but nothing out the distributor you should be right by just changing the cap/rotor. I always have a cunt of a time cause I have big hands, and the back clip for the cap is also a cunt to clip back on. It's all quite doable though.

Thanks fellas, much appreciated. Let's hope lady luck smiles and gives me a quick bang in the morning.

If it's the same setup as the ED, double check the coil.
My old thread might be helpful.

FIIK. How similar are ED to EL ignition systems? Probably identical, huh.

What an absolute cunt of a place to locate these items.

What gets me though is the car was running and just stopped dead. I Started it up OK, was about to put it into gear to back out of the drive, and it shut-down. I'm thinking if it was moisture related it would of run shit for a bit before dying, right?

Yeah I don't know how similar they are, just that they went to coil packs then back again, but somebody else would know if it was the ED setup they went back to, or just back to a dizzy.

From memory, we needed a long shaft screwdriver to even get the dizzy cap clips back on, and I think the coil needed to be got at from underneath the car (not certain though).

Your moisture theory sounds right to me, but then I would have thought a decent spark out of the coil on my issue would have been enough to get it to start too.

No go in the morning, still fubared.

Popped the bonnet and had a good look in the morning sun. Access to the distributor is further restricted by the LPG setup. There is a large brass fitting hanging off the water pump with two heater hoses go that to the mixer, pretty much running down the side of the engine. Then there is the corrugated air intake hose running from the airbox to the mixer. Spent 10mins fucking around with it before I cracked the shits.

I only had an hour or so in the morning to get it sorted, and to be honest I couldn't be fucked dealing with it. I had it towed to Mum's mechanic for him to sort out.

I told him the NRMA prognosis and asked him to replace the cap and rotor. He did that it still didn't go. The cap and rotor looked like they had never been touched in the 11 years since the car had been buiilt. Mechanic said coil definitely had spark, but the car still wouldn't run. He then replaced the coil, and it all worked OK.

I'm glad I had it towed.

Thanks for all the advice along the way.

if the plugs and leads are old i would suggest changing them as well or the new coil might fail again.

lpg is very harsh on ignition components in general.

So exactly the same issue as I had then - coil seemed fine but was the problem. At least you didn't go buy a whole new distributor first like I did...

Yes Goose, sounds like the same prob.

RB - thanks for the heads up. I'll get it sorted for Mum.
