oh , one of the most important things , post flow , gotta keep that gas going until the tungsten is cooled off , or your next start is going to be contaminated EVERY time.

So the gas is to stop the hot metal reacting with oxygen?

I have never really looked as a gas mig/tig ever in my life. I dont even know where the gas comes out.

Might pic myself up a little cheap wire mig and have a go at doing my own exhaust.

Thanks for the advice Rz, much appreciated. I seem to have melted the torch a bit now so will have to get something watercooled.

it would be worth having a bash on a big machine , like mine for instance to see if its worth staying with that machine or upgrading.
that torch must of been on fire after all that welding.

What sort of machine would be good to get Rz? Apart from not melting the torch what other benefits does a big machine offer. Better weld quality?

im not really up with whats on the market now but ive allways liked millers 250.
was about 6500 including a torch and i think that was 1k by itself.
upgrade to a good torch first and see how you go , can always carry it onto a better machine later.
do the chinese machines have hf start ?

Yep, the gas is used to prevent oxidization of the weld.

I reckon you should get the mig and give it a go. Don't forget the grinder :D

Did a bit to the manifold today, had a big week so it didn't get a look in till today.

Mounted the throttle body flange plate and plated in the gaps. The TB needs some minor mods to the linkage to allow it to operate freely(it's got some wacky chinese return spring on it that gives no fark for compactness) but it all fits otherwise. The flange is slightly offset from centre to allow the TB to fit next to the water outlet. Hardly noticable though.

Still haven't got my farking pedal that I paid for up front farking. Got a bit hot through some welds but I think I am getting a lot more aware of when it happens so once I get the pedal I will be able to control it then.

Had to replace the gas shroud seal and O ring on the torch after last weekend as they both melted and the rubber outer of the torch is all gooey too but still working. Can get a water cooled torch for $350, then just have to hook it up to a cooling system.

Lol, yes that system was on the top of the list since we have an abundance of water atm and I would be using it very rarely anyway.

Can't quite put my finger on why, but that shot through the throttle body plate into the interior of the plenum makes me want to laugh.

Improved cooling system suggestion for torch -> Subaru heater unit plus water pump hooked up to lines to and from torch. Power the lot with 12v battery or battery charger. ??? Thoughts?
                          Cheers, Richard

change 12v charger to a 12v power source or a rectifier.

My old mate up the road has an old drinking water cooler rigged up for his TIG(enormous Miller). The lack of current control is annoying me atm.

Waiting on injector mounts and still deciding on whether to use a stepper motor off a toyota or the original 2 wire Nissan IAC.

Also after opinions on whether to use a PCV system on the engine or just let it breathe into a can and to atmo.

Use the 2wire open close one from a Hyundai Excel, the PWM toyota ones are a pain to control.
