Forg are you thinking of the OT1600 and 2000TC??...thats the 850 sport with a twin cam conversion from the bigger fiat cars. There are a couple of blokes in the fiat vic and SA clubs who have done the work. Nippy cars, but 850 sports are not that cheap anymore (those that have not rusted away.
Why not a 128?....very revvy and cheap to run and insure.
I do know where there is a 2 door shovel nose rusting away in a front yard in Melb...no idea if its a gt or anything....rusty!
Maybe best find that fiat or another in the fiat club up there?
Hakosuka, I contacted a 124 nut who runs a fiat workshop in hawthorn and queried the parts interchangability of 124 sedan and ac-cc. The suspension parts will bolt up but are not interchangeable, you cannot run a 124 sedan wishbone etc on one side and a coupe on the other, same with rear suspension parts, so the old fiat thing of same but just a bit different?
I don't care a damn for your loyalty when you think I am right; when I really want it most is when you think I am wrong.

      Hey floody,

The engine in the GT5 is the 9R, based on the 3 bearing 4R (I think that is the designation) 1.6 Corona S (which has twin hitachi SU type carbs) pushrod motor. The 9R had a Yamaha designed and built 8 valve twin cam head with the cams driven by chains. And it was fed by twin Mikuni Solxes. The twin cam head was very similar in design to the 2000 GT motor which also of course Yamaha had a hand in.

The 9R was never used in any other Toyota and is completely unrelated to the 2TG. The only thing the 9R and the 2TG have in common is that they were 1.6 twin cam engines designed and built by Yamaha and Toyota.

The gearbox was the usual Corona 4 speed (if a GT4) and the 2000GT 5 speed if the car is a GT5. The 5 speed was very strong and can handle 200 HP. The front seats in the 1600 GT were also donoated from the 2000GT. The rear diff was based on a Toyota truck diff and LSD was optional.

The suspension was slightly lower and the rear end had track rods. In a Wheels comparison from 1968 the GT5 was compared to the Guilia, Volvo 123GT, and Lancia Fulvia. It was the worst handler of the 4, but it was certainly by no means bad, and it was definetly above average for the period and was well above the norm for contemporary Jap cars too, accoring to reports at the time.

As well as being a hardtop which is very rare anyway for Coronas in Oz from this period, the 1600 GT also had different front guards with a little vent and larger wheel cutouts. The wheel cavitys front and rear were larger to allow fatter tyres to be fitted for racing.

For anyone intersted, thay only made about 3000-400 of these and the vast majority are in Japan - where good ones sell for AUD $25,000 - with probably hald a dozen in Oz and who knows how many in South Africa and other funny places where they may have been sold.

Enough of the 1600 GT for now! :O See pics of engine and a racing version below.

Don't get me wrong floody, I don't dislike the Datto 1600 at all. I realise that for value for $ they are just about unbeatable when u modify them. All I am saying is that if you modify a 2002 to the same extent that you do a 1600, the BM will be a bit better etc. Sure you would have to spend megabucks, but I get your point.

Nero, I must admit that I am surpsised by that lack of absolute suspension interchangability, but fundametally the Sports were based on the sedans. It does seem to be a case of close but different, but I am amazed, and Fiat were tightarses, and they generally tried to use as many common parts here and there.

The 850 coupe Abarth OT 2000 was an absolute screamer - it could do 240 kmh. I have a pic from my 1968 World Cars Catalouge, but I al to lazy to scan it for those who don't know how angry and mean these things look. :D
Only the mighty 1970 GTR (see my avatar) looks more angry :worship:

My mum had a 850 with an Abarth engine in the late 60's/early 70's. apparently was seriously quick, but kinda quirky handling, and pretty loud what with abarth extractors and open bellmouthed webers and stuff. She can't remember exactly what motor it ws though, but apparently it was considerably larger than 850cc. She said maybe 1.3 litres or more? ....previous to that she had a honda s600 which had been burnt out, rescued and fitted with a modified s800 engine and the later model shaft transmission as opposed to the chain one. "like a four wheeled motorbike" apparently....Sold the fiat for a 4 barrel, hardtop, vg pacer in yellow/black, for a little bit more space......Anyway apparently the fiat was quite a fast little car and had a "funny noisy gearbox" which I assume was a straight cut race style one. Probably rusting in victoria somehwere as we speak.....If you could get one it would probably be possible to build a good little car. What about a hillman imp?.....always had a softspot for them things......bit too british for me though.....
          cheers,
          floody
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe, and from this side only! The flight of a half-man, half-bird. Dinosaurs nuzzling their young in pastures where strip-malls should be. Cookies on dowels. All those moments lost in time; gone like eggs off a hooker's stomach. Time to die.
