In every car That has ever come off the dyno when it is taken on the street, the only way to be certan that there was no pinging was to do it with the widows up. You can hear it 100 times better, and notice things that you could not here with the windows down. Another way is to stand on the road and listen as the car is comming towards you. Cover both you ears with you fingers, sounds stupid but it works. Doing this blocks out all the back ground noise. Try it!

What does pinging sound like?

Actually I've been worried about mine lately
It makes a pinging type sound only low revs + load... Doesn't have any issues top end, Although it seems to be more noticable when cold.
The car is going in for a dyno in the next week or two so I will have to ask em what they think...Speed cameras: Best tax ever! The one that makes you pay and makes you think you deserve it.

I agree with SICKM, it is often easier to hear with the windows up, and the blocking the ears thing is proved by the fact that on a dyno, often the dude who is listening for pinging with his head in the engine bay does so while wearing ear muffs! Not so much for the volume of the engine as for making the sound of the pinging stand out more.

Jesus! Must have been some pinging!
I have found tat if there are lots of reflective surfaces around, such as brick walls etc. I can hear pinging quite well with windows down, though I think this works best if the pinging is a particularly harsh metallic sound, as it is with my car...

My colt (which ran out of rego and went to car heaven yesterday) was the ping-o-master, and yet still ran for 2 years (couldn't be bothered getting my hands dirty and winding back the timing).
You could hear it from about 100 metres away. Sounded like ball bearings dropping into a flying pan
It was worst at low revs when you put some load on it (ie, going up hills). If you revved it out, it was usually ok though.

Hmm, strange when I drive in a tunnel or next to a wall or something I can hear a sort of metallic rattling, but I think that's just the engine rattling, cause it's all the time, not just under load etc... and it sounded like that even when the ignition was wound back to +0...
Someone else who has an old Corolla just emailed me, he's running +35 degrees ignition... :D
