I just measured the depression left on my valve springs on full lift my cams and have around 2mm left on the intake and 1.5mm on the exhaust.
      Is this enough?

      Cheers.

I quote Smokey Yunick. Valve springs are the highest wear rate item in an engine.

Change the springs and retainers. If I rememebr theres a Kawaski motor bike engine spring that fits right into the 2J head..... Anyone know anything further?

They don't work very hard on a four valve head. The seat pressure could be as little as 25% of an equivalent 2V head.

              Bang on there Bill.

Stock 1FZ springs have a seat pressure of under 40 lbs.

I can install/remove them without a spring compressor - all it takes is a bit of alloy tube with a notch in the end to push on the retainer!

In a pushrod engine the valve spring has to push the mass of the valve + retainer closed, but also the rocker arm, pushrod and lifter.

In a typical late model DOHC head, it's only got the valve, retainer and bucket to shove closed.

In the 1FZ, the seat pressure of the uprated springs is approx 110lbs, but in addition the FJ20 solid buckets are only 60% the mass of the 1FZ shim over buckets.

All up it means that the effective spring pressure increase at only 110 seat is over 200% above std. God bless bucket type DOHC valvetrains.
Adjustable cam gears for 1FZ-FE now ready for sale - 10 degrees advance/10 degrees retard. Suitable for all variants of 1FZ-FE.

(adjustable scissor gear for changing separation angle between the intake and exhaust cams coming soon)

International sales welcome - PM me for pricing.

Thanks for the answers. Will leave them for now. The cams are only advertised as 264 (220/226 at 0.050) and have 9.52mm lift.

Thanks for explaining this guys. Would explain why the Typhoon valve springs I have handled looked so light and dodgey, when in fact they weren't.

Sorry to digress lads.. as you where.
