If the oil leak is just a weep N then there is no pressure involved so it would be quite possible to fix it temporarily. But if its pissing out then thats different.

Clamping the hose so it does not put excessive strain on the connection is a good idea, installing a cooler takes some thinking through if its to be done properly.

what abotu the alloy soldering stuff Takai posted about? sure it is only zinc, but for just a crack, it might work well for a short time....
probably take longer to order that stuff than a new cooler..

Get away with a lot with water, but not oil.
Other thing to worry about is why it cracked. I did two coolers, in the same way you describe, before realising that when I started cold, the hose was stiff and was stressing the joint. Cure was to put a clamp on the hose just before it went into the cooler and anchor it back to the cooler mounts. Forced the hose to flex.
Yeah I decided it simply wasn't worth the risk. Replacing the oil cooler is a prick of a job but replacing the motor is an even bigger prick.

I think I had simply tried to do the oil line fitting up too tightly and broken the weld. Hopefully I've learnt a lesson and won't be such a gorilla in the future.
