mate i thought the same... that's about 50rwhp/litre which is phenomenally sad

bpm - interested to see a dyno sheet, if you have access... that's not bad for 8psi but you'd want it to skyrocket with the next 8psi. i don't think you'd fark around with a turbo v8 if you weren't going to make over 450rwhp... shit you can make that from a 2j with your eyes closed and it's two litres & two cylinders short

im sure they could make much more, this one had a very rough hotside setup, and a tired bone stock engine. i was getting pretty nervous every run from the amount of smoke coming out the breathers. no sheet, new dyno due next week, old one is all packed up

sucker's was a standard engine with a small turbo running minimal boost, of course it wasn't going to make much power..

          rubbish

5 litre + 8psi should give an effective displacement of ~7.5 litres
          any engine should make 50hp/litre
          assuming 20% driveline loss
you'd still want 300rwhp on the most shit setup in the world
shit most stock jap motors with half the capacity make 200rwhp+ with a stock exhaust and the stock 8-10psi

so if i put a CA18det turbo on a 6L and run a bar of boost it should make ~600hp..?

there's more to it than displacement.

It was a to4b garret turbo, not that small, it was bought from gcg for that engine. It had basically no lag. When tuned it was running 6-7psi. There was some issues with the wastegate. When he was tuning it he rang me and said the wastegate was to high, supposed to be 6psi and it was running 12+ on the dyno. He changed it, and when i picked it up it was running 6psi, boost cut at 10 i think. It was all fine for a few months then it started hitting the boost cut when thrashing it. By the time i pulled it off the road maybe 8 months later it was running 12psi. All verified by my eye on my autometer boost guage.

When mine was done i only knew of one other turbo 5 litre in oz, one done by active automotive in WA.

At the time it wasnt that common to see turbo v8s on the street. Today the numbers dont seem that exciting but i think it would have done a low 13-high 12 if it got traction.

              It was built around 2004ish.

As long as you run a 600hp fuel pump, yes. :knock:

Clearly I'm not talking exact science, I'm just saying that 270rwhp for a five litre turbocharged engine running half a bar of boost on a reasonably sized turbo in any state of tune is pissweak.. there's something wrong

                my bike makes 180rwhp on 8psi and it's 1.4lt

props to you mate, i'd kill to own a turbo v8 streeter, just saying that certainly by today's standards those numbers are hellllllllllllll low

Shit yeah, if it ran those numbers on the dyno today you would shoot the tuner. :D

Buuuuuttt, then you have to think, if you stuck the same shit on one today, got a higher power number on the dyno, would it run faster or would you just have a dyno figure saying it is faster??????

It's funny that it used to take a full on N/A 304 to make 450 and now the same bits make 600. I am pretty sure the numbers have changed to be honest.

with your setup sucker you would have seen a farkin big jump in power if you were able to wind 12psi.

people get wound up about numbers. Look at TKs shitter engine, if you can keep the heads on the engine 16+ psi is there, and if you have decent heads and a cam the power will jump dramatically.

If I was doing a stock 304 I would seriously think about changing the cam.

p.s. I have started looking for a VP with a 304 in it, but I only want to pay 1k.

Don't think it's just a case of we've learnt how to bolt 'em together better?

The Electronics and EFI tuning have moved a long way as has turbo technology even in 10 years.

Hell even in stuff like sport compact think how "mundane" most people find a 9 second 24x9 pass or a mid to low 8 second Pro-class pass is viewed.

That would only work if drag strips had gotten shorter.
