Consensus seems to be that 304s are a bit crap in a modern commodore, does anyone have any experiences of transplanted early Commodores?

Is the couple of hundred kilo weight saving enough to liven things up?

to lead nearly any pack costs 50+k, clearly not the point of this thread.

if you think even an eleven second rwd isn't a world of fun you are doing it wrong.

sammm, the 304s are only crap without boost, unless you spend a freaking fortune and turn them into a pig.

The vn 308s were over rated, 200rwhp stock? not a chance. they were around 215hp at the fly and you were lucky if you got that,

308's without boost are crap I've had a couple in my time and I can't believe how slow they were in retrospect. I'd dearly LOVE to experience turbo V8 power even on a 304/308. Bogandave is right though an 11 second car is a ton of fun and would scare most people a few times I would think.

No I was getting at the fact that the costs I would say have remained somewhat stagnant but what has increased is our understanding. IE a 50 dollar widget still costs 50 dollars but it now works 60% better than it did 10 years ago.

IE if you built a turbo 304 with a more modern EFI, fuel, fuel pumps, Turbo, etc hanging off it you wouldn't just get 270rwhp for the same dollars. People have worked out how to make a better wheel and hence the power outputs are going up. That was my point.

IE I don't think Shifty should write off the 304 just because old mate only made 270 at the wheels 10 year ago or whatever it is.

                  ok.

I think 400rwhp is possible quiet cheaply, if you build your own manifolds. a gt40 is going to have very close, and they are available so cheaply. As long as you don't have a brain failure and go stupid like I have there is a lot of fun available for cheap, especially when you think in dollar per hp terms.

Looks like 450rwhp is achievable safely with stock internals & stock heads - you'd probably spend $3k or so on a bit of a freshen up (TK would be able to give more of an idea?)

Using a set of widely available turbos (eg. s15, 13bt, evo, etc) on custom manifolds you're probably looking at $2500 with oil lines etc. Another $1500 for dumps and a basic exhaust system.

Fuel system & tuning probably about $2000 assuming the factory ecu can be farked with (which is my understanding).

                    Intercooling $1000 inc piping, etc

                    Misc shit another $2k

                    Gearbox $4k

About $15k for 400rwhp... but there's just somethign about a TT V8 that makes it awesome... aside from the sound it would be nice to stick it to bogans with auto 351 xd's and dropped pipes running 13s

Numbers always were and will always be bullshit.

I had a stock VT 304 (roller cam) with a single 3" exhaust and a pod filter that ran back to back 185rwkw (~250rwhp) at an "official SC dyno day" at SAS in Sydney

twins are shit, cheaper and easier to go a single for a number of reasons. Go and get yourselves one of these: http://www.boostcruising.com/forums/...6905&hl=gt4082. twins are a fucking pain in the arse in a commodore engine bay and you have twice as much shit to fail. Ebay has plenty of oil lines to suit. For mine, given the size of it, I got them from an american company called www.racepartsolutions.com

With your manifolds, if you can't weld then get yourself a cheap gasless mig and a holesaw and start tacking them together. Wouldn't cost more than a couple hundred bucks to have a pro finish the welds.

Gearbox you could do cheaper from the states, a turbo 400 to suit 700hp is between 1000-1500 usd plus about 500 for shipping, I was seriously considering a hughes or abruzzi transmission, when my glide came up.

That setup should be good for a 10.

p.s. twin turbos are aids, unless you are talking about twin 88mm turbos

p.s. get to know summit well, this will keep your costs down. If you want to keep the heads tied down they list cometics and arp bolts, for much cheaper than available locally.

Are people still using kalmaker to tune these things?
