All skyline turbo's from R31 to R34, GTR and GTST have ceramic exhaust wheels.
EXCEPT - N1 gtrs which got the steel wheels on both ends.

R33 gtst series 2 and R34 GTT have also added a plastic compressor wheel.
it helps with quicker spool up (bees dick).

still just as fragile exhaust wheel (and ALOT more fragile compressor wheel)

    S14 and S15 stock turbo's are T28.
    S13 SR's are T25
GTiR SR's get the biggest factory T28

    *ALL all thrust bearing.
the only T28 ball bearing turbo's have a different part number (I can find it somewhere if you really want it)

*some S15s came with the ball bearing turbos.. jap and aus.. it's a mixed bag.

Some very optimistic power figures being quoted.

I think many cunts don't understand the difference between kw and rwkw these days.

My old SR20(s) were producing between 230rwHP and 250rwHP (whats that 160 - 170rwKW?) standard internally with various factory turbos's and Wolf 3D, qtr miles varied from 13.4 to 12.8 in a Bluebird.

I've ran thru this BMW scenario a million times in my head, and for my money, as a bang for buck exercise engine transplants SR20, 1J, 2J, and LS1 win every time over upgrading BMW factory powerplants
1978 Opel Manta SR Berlinetta 1UZFE
        2013 Opel Insignia OPC

Indeed, fairly easy to make power from the Sr20's, I'm talking more about bmw engines on low boost / mildly worked M52's and the like "making 200rwkw" and all these figures for down the pub.

Shipping with insurance was $125, though that's slow boat-spec. If you know where to look you can find M54 cranks out here, though they're expensive - much like all BMW parts it seems. Hopefully I'll have one in my hands for my E30 soon enough.
You act like this is my first time around the block, would you like pics of the 8 or so 3L cranks I have imported and sold? Good $250 cranks are kinda thin on the ground, plus sea freight pretty much means you have no insurance. If you purchased the item through ebay/paypal, if item turns up trashed, you have no recourse because it took 8-10 weeks to arrive.

You are also forgetting a couple of things mate, you need rods for starters, even secondhand they will still cost you $150-$200 for a cheap set and they will arrive with the bearing tangs flogged out. You'll end up having to restore them, or simply better off buying a new set and staying away from used.

Ive yet to see anything come out of the us S50 motors that wasnt worn in some shape or another. They run them to 8000 rpm and still suffer oil starvation problems the real M motors do, so its pretty normal to see wear in things like rod caps and crank journals which need addressing (simply from use).

Its all a moot point anyway because the OP made it clear he doesnt want to spend stupid money on parts. Im pretty positive he would baulk at just the cost of rod and main bearings anyway.

I agree with other people too btw, there is nothing cost effective about staying bmw. Even getting a twin cam motor into an E30 will have half this thread crying about the money spent.

I think we will have to agree to disagree, Rod. I don't know where you're sourcing your parts from, but it sounds like they're not selling good stuff.

As you say, it's a moot point as this is PF - where engine swap budgets covers the cost of the halfcut and a tank of fuel (as JZK25 put it). Bang for buck, he'd be best off with a dozen $100 VS V6 emootec donks + nitrous + dodgy turbo install. Crank the boost, replace engine when it blows with another one from the pile...

Mate you have to remember, everyone makes comments without taking the OPs scenarios into situation. Im a uni student, ive got a bit of cash to throw around at this project but nothing major. If things start fucking up on a BMW engine build id be up shit creak, trying to find parts will be a pain, sure ordering from overseas will cut costs but then the waiting time.
With an SR20 parts are plentiful/local/cheapish. Plus the overall build costs will be much cheaper, and the sr20 is a half decent motor, its got the potential there for the power I want without ringing it to an inch of its life if done correctly.

One day I will probably build a bmw motor, ive always wanted an e46 turbo, ive had the e46, just didnt want to touch it for the same reason, was at uni and if something broke id be swimming in that wonderfull creak again.

Anyways you havnt thrown any numbers at me so I take it that its shit expensive compared to the sr20. So looks like case is closed here.

PS: Marv im not being a smart ass, im actually interested in the price of the beamer engine parts, Im never able to find then, maybe PM me with some details of suppliers or something.

www.E36V8.com is why I sold my E39 and didn't care... once the falcon is finished, maybe in a year or two if I don't pick up an LH/LX Sedan, LX Coupe or XR/T/W/Y to restore then I'm going with that.

www.E30V8.com also... but some bashing is involved.

First things to consider after you have a list of possible engines is find out what there sump layouts are and whether they have multiple options(front or rear sump well).

I'd be considering whether you need tyre shredding stupid power in an E30 as they wiegh fuck all and probably don't have the tyre to put it down. A decent 4 cylinder NA like a Beams 3SGE or SR20VE would make it a very capable car without the need for intercooler and other turbo specific extras that cost extra and require space that you might not have.

I'm a fan of VQ30's, very compact apart from overall engine height due to an odd sump design and plenty of power and scope for power. Also cheap to buy. Gearbox options are many and not overly expensive.
