Thread hijack - why is a sheetmetal diff lighter and/or better?
How could it be significantly lighter than a regular diff? From what little I know about them, the housing is fabricated from sheet metal?

much stronger than a factory housing due to material and gauge, but generally not lighter. Yep, factory ones are all stamped parts from sheet anyway and welded together.
Adjustable cam gears for 1FZ-FE now ready for sale - 10 degrees advance/10 degrees retard. Suitable for all variants of 1FZ-FE.

(adjustable scissor gear for changing separation angle between the intake and exhaust cams coming soon)

International sales welcome - PM me for pricing.

Yeah I can't see how they could weigh less but I could see strength benefits

I spoke to Red at Crafts today and he recommends using one these

Sorry I thought you already HAD the nine inch and wanted to convert to a sheet metal.

V8 Supercar diff housings? A mate of mine made them for a few teams including HRT. Would something like that we adaptable or wayyyy too different?
Reckon there'd be a few spares about these days....

As I've asked before a few times but never got an answer; why don't more (any?) drag racers use deDion rear ends? Much lighter for unsprung weight and it decouples the torque reaction from the diff.

Diff is bolted solidly to the chassis. Beam axle across behind it with the wheels attached to that. The beam (deDion tube) is free to move around but has far less mass than a regular live axle and doesn't transmit the torque reaction from the tailshaft.

Never driven a car with one, but I can see the benefits. Iirc Alfettas used it, as did Rover P6, Chrysler used it as well on their AWD minivans, with leaf springs!
