    Gritty oil...

Just did an oil change on both cars, the X-Trail is spot on, however the Kraut concerns me. The oil that came out was barely 10,000km old yet felt very gritty. I've organised to get a sample analysed, but thought I'd ask if the PF brains trust had any knowledge on the matter whilst I wait?

    What do you mean gritty?
If you rub it between your fingers, whats in it?

Like there was fine sand in the oil.

Whats the filter cartridge look like?
Does it have an (working) air filter?

Air filter is fine, the filter cartridge looked normal.

Do the gritty bits have a penchant for magnets?

Magnet test was negative, grits aren't ferrous. Magnesium alloy block with Alusil liners, unless crank and/or bearings are committing seppuku.

If there are legitimate gritty particles in the oil that came out of the sump then your filter would be full of the shit

I just fished the filter out of the bin, it feels gritty too.

Just dilute it with a bit of mower fuel & run it through a paper towel.
Are you sure you didn't contaminate the oil change container ??

Shall do, just need to find where the fuel can is since I replaced the petrol mower with a Victa 82V electric mower.

I rubbed the oil between my fingers as it came out.
